Hats on - how will you wear yours this summer?
Published April 2007

Whether you choose a hat to travel to work, wear on holiday or for a wedding, with this summer forecast to be the hottest on record a hat will be the coolest and most stylish “must have” addition to your wardrobe.

lock & co flat weave panama There are plenty of hats to choose from this season. One of the essential shapes for the summer is the glamorous wide brimmed panama or straw sun hat. With its’ relaxed styling it is chic and easy to wear.

Other key styles are the classic fedora and its narrower brimmed cousin the trilby. Worn by celebrity hat wearers Madonna (pictured in one whilst in Malawi), Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, and the inimitable Johnny Depp, they are equally becoming on both women and men. But it is Doherty and Moss, with their hard hitting public lifestyles, who can take a bow for bringing a new fashionably edgy status to trilby wearing today.

For the hat connoisseur the natural choice is the panama. This summer you may wish to go for the traditional fedora style - its broad sweeping brim will give you sartorially elegant shade, or the summer straw or panama small snap brimmed trilby variety worn by the bad boys of the music industry. For those chaps looking for a hint of Sinatra rat pack retro chic, the pork pie, with its distinctive pie crust crown and natty small brim, is the one.

Once you have chosen your preferred style wear it with a hint of individuality to suit your style.

  • Follow tradition and wear your hat straight on the head with the brim turned down at the front and up at the back.
  • Go artistic or incognito, pull it over the head and turn it down all around like Winston Churchill in water colourist mode.
  • For the rebel, throw it defiantly on the back of the head over tousled hair Doherty and Moss style.
  • Wear it debonairly tilted over one eye like Sinatra who wore his trilby and pork pie hats ‘his way’.
  • Throw it on and team with jeans and a tank a la Madonna for effortless cool style.

Whatever you choice, your hat will be your best friend and your weapon against the strongest of summer sun whilst ensuring that you look nothing but divinely cool.
