A Useful Piece Of Kit...
Published on Monday 17th March 2008

When my husband and I got married we did our wedding list at Wedding Presents Direct – a wedding list company I’d highly recommend. Not only are the girls absolutely lovely (and full of advice – like how many gravy boats you’ll really need), not only do you get plied with champagne at every visit (though Saturday mornings and a hangover meant we filled up on OJ instead) but it’s also quaintly laid out and kitted out just like the grownup home you hope to own.

just slateI have two top tips when it comes to doing your wedding list. Number one – leave husband to be at home for at least one visit and take your mother instead (you’ll want a second opinion on which dinner service to go for and he won’t have a clue) and number two – put a Slate Cheese Board on your list.

It was on mine and it has been one of my most used gifts to date (that and my – I mean our – Richard Bramble place mats). The Slate Board’s obvious use is cheese and grapes but it’s also ultra useful for displaying all sort of goodies.

I use mine to serve bruschetta mango chutney and goats cheese nibbles* (delicious – recipe below), sushi (it’s easier than you’d think to make and the pieces look stunning on slate) and for an easy pud, gooey brownies and strawberries pilled up. Just pop the slate board in the middle of the table and let everyone pick away.

And if you’re not likely to be doing a wedding list at Wedding Presents Direct any time soon then you can buy one online at The Just Slate Company or Paxton & Whitfield .

*(Simply chop a French stick into rings, grill each one on both sides until golden, then put a tsp of mango chutney followed by a lump of soft goats cheese on top - then back under the grill to heat.)
