Sarah's Blog

A freelance journalist from Sydney, Sarah lives in South East London with her husband Dave and three children, Phoenix, Cassian and Leon. She likes raspberries, stars, lilies, butterflies, Blondie, Jack Bauer and the smell of coriander and garlic when it hits the pan.

She loves motherhood and sings a mean nursery rhyme but can’t help but wish that wearing Louboutins to soft play wasn’t considered bad form. Her favourite online stores are NetAPorter.com, Waterstones.com, SpaceNK.co.uk, & Plumo.com.

A Whole New Wardrobe

Published on Friday 19th March 2010

Five years? Really? Apparently so. Apparently it’s been 5 years since I walked (some would say flounced) down a rainforest aisle in my Alan Hannah dress. Five years!! Somehow, in the near-constant fug of pregnancy and broken nights (we now have three adorable, hectic children) 5 years have marched by and left their terribly unstylish footprints all over my face.

kurt-geiger-nicole-farhi-nadetta-sarah-r-blog.jpg Large sunglasses and a good serum will go a long way towards masking the damage and to be honest, I’m not all that bothered since I’ve spotted, in this state of affairs, a shopping opportunity (seek and ye shall find - and if you don’t find, invent). The trick, I‘ve decided, is to draw attention away from the face with a whole new wardrobe. Oh, and not to eat too much. So that the fabulous wardrobe looks fabulous on me, and not just on the hangers.

(These macaroons are surely exempt from such considerations though – wheat bloats, but these are made from almonds; besides, surely nothing so pretty could possibly be thigh-swelling?)

I think I might be having a bit of a moment with printed tees, with this horse print one currently on an almost constant wash-dry-wear cycle (am loving it with leather pencil skirt, opaques and patent ankle boots until the weather hots up) and a slouchy swan print top pulling double duty as tee and derriere-disguiser when worn with skinnies or Black Rats.

My feet are longing to see the light of day after a long winter in boots and, with my pedi at the ready, I’m giving some serious thought to clogs. I can’t quite bring myself to love Hasbeens (I think it’s the Sarah Jessica Parker connection... I have an uneasy relationship with Carrie Bradshaw) but, on the whole, I’m loving the whole clog-inspired thing.

Kurt Geiger has proved to be my new distraction, with so many gorgeous shoes to choose from that I’ve still not actually managed to make checkout. I’m really rather taken with the Fashionistas but wish they were available in a brown or neutral … The Krista is also speaking to me, as is the Nadetta.

How fortuitous, though, that the clog trend has just happened to coincide with the wedding anniversary for which the traditional gift is wood. I mean, maybe I don’t have to decide on just one pair of shoes?

A Spring in my Step

Tuesday 16th March 2010

Despite the less-than-encouraging temperatures, I'm rather doggedly channeling Spring at the moment and relegating anything in a wintry palette to the back of my wardrobe - and with daffodils just about to appear (so full of promise!) I'm paying homage with a bit of peppy yellow. I'm not kidding myself that it's time...

Two Thousand and Zen

Wednesday 27th January 2010

Almost impossible to believe that 12 months ago, I was expressing my intention to dub the year ‘Two Thousand and Wine’. Things didn’t exactly work out that way (hello, baby Leon!) but this year, I’m determined that nothing – not even a new baby - will stand in the way of having a...

A Very Cashmere Christmas

Tuesday 22nd December 2009

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. As a vegetarian, I’m not much bothered about the goose – but let me tell you about some things that are getting thin: 1. Me. Well, relatively speaking. Compared to my 9-months-pregnant self of a few months ago, anyway. Oh, leave me alone. I’m...

The Trickiest Dinner Guests

Friday 27th November 2009

It Girl. Socialite. Party Girl. Truth is, none of these epithets can be applied to me, much as I might sometimes wish that I had a designer wardrobe and function-crammed Smythson that begs to differ. Nonetheless, I do rather love a party, regardless of whether it’s my own or someone else’s...

Heels Away

Wednesday 28th October 2009

So now I am a mother of three! Just two months after my first turned three, and just two months before my second turns two, Leon Magnus was born at home weighing a healthy 8lb1. He’s heaven. It’s hectic, but heaven. And if two children weren’t enough to make me feel...
