An Alternative Take On Picnicking... Published on Wednesday 4th July 2007
I’ve never quite understood why people always go away for their summer holidays in July and August (by people I’m referring to those that don’t have children). Why you’d want to hit the airport and share the beach with all your fellow Brits is totally beyond me.
During the summer months I’m much happier on home turf: barbeques, picnics, Ascot, Henley – they’re about the best of British and I hate to miss them for anything.
By this time last year I’d spent at least half a dozen evenings in the park with a husband or a gaggle of girlfriends, my picnic hamper and a bottle (or two)of Rose in tow.
But for this kind of activity, dry turf wouldn’t go amiss. In fact this summer I feel like I’ve been well and truly robbed by the Rain Man. And I fully understand why those people I mentioned might have opted to go away and avoid the disappointment.
It had all seemed so promising and after a spoiling Fortnum & Mason summer picnic in the park (the heavenly Rose Garden at Hyde Park) in early June with a jazz player, Pimms, old fashioned picnic hampers, comfy cushions, luxe rugs to lie on and their oh so yummy picnic hampers to sample, I was all set to go.
The next day it rained, and the day after that, and the day after that.
Not long after that I was spoilt even more when Forman & Field sent me The Pick ; a complete ready-to-eat gourmet picnic, that includes smoked salmon paupiettes, Mrs King's pork pie, potato & watercress salad, English strawberries & clotted cream, cheese & biscuits, a bottle of Chapel Down Rose and even biodegradable plates & cutlery, glasses and napkins all in its very own cool bag (£39.95).
With the rain still tipping it down outside, I was determined to make the most of this ready prepared English feast (that meant I barely had to lift a finger) and decided to improvise.
So I laid my new Daylesford Picnic Rug across the carpet, followed by the picnic, lit a couple of candles and my husband and I enjoyed a delicious but alternative take on picnicking.
