Blusher Tips & Choices...
Published on Monday 5th May 2008

Gel, powder, cream or liquid? Which one would I recommend? The blusher dilemma is an interesting one. Mainly because I’d imagine that, as with the majority of my friends, the majority of you opt for powder. Powder is the easiest fall-back option, safest to apply if you’re unsure about what you’re doing and has the most colour options available.

I too am a fan of powder blusher. For best results tap the brush removing any excess. All great blusher brushes are made to fit the shape of the apple of your cheekbones. Press the brush into the apple then take the colour up diagonally towards the hairline. To soften the colour blend down afterwards.

At the moment I’m a big fan of the powder blushers that aren’t one straight colour. They give a more natural look and are really easy to blend. Ok so I’m biased but Clinique do one that’s a beautiful flower compact.

For oilier skins powder is really not the best option. The colour won’t last and application might be difficult. Your best option is cream or gel. They give long lasting colour although they can be a bit messier! Best tactic is to use your ring finger.

Get the product onto your finger and roll it onto your cheeks. If you rub most of the product stays on your finger. Try Bobbi Browns Pot Rouge. ‘Pink truffle’ is my favourite – and perfect for wedding makeup. And if you’re carrying a small bag then it can also double up as a lip colour!

Liquid blushers are great too. If I’m going out or doing someone’s wedding makeup I like to apply a liquid highlighter under a powder. It gives the ‘glow’ affect, highlights the cheekbones where the light catches and holds the stronger colour of powder blusher longer.

Here are my 3 top tips whichever formula you use:

1. Pick a colour that compliments your skin tone.

2. Blend your colour – don’t stripe.

3. Build your colour slowly, and add more for the evening.
