Jill's Blog

Jill, old enough not to want to give away her age, is mother to four demanding daughters that keep her on her toes when it comes to anything retail and beauty related.

Jill much prefers shopping online to fighting the masses instore and her favourite websites include EveLom.co.uk, OkaDirect.com, TimeToSpa.co.uk, Inverawe.co.uk and FormanAndField.com (the latter two keep the men in the family smiling!).

Brushed off

Published on Sunday 15th July 2007

If you like to change your hair with times (I do otherwise I’d still be sporting the perm and it wasn’t pretty) after a visit to the hairdressers the ‘new do’ and the ‘new you’ has to be cared for in a different way from the old. And updating your brushes isn’t to be over looked when updating your hair.

kent brushesAll those brushes that you’ve had over the years in every size and shape under the sun are deemed useless. No, for this new style you have to have a bigger rounder brush with a ceramic base if you’ve a hope in h*ll of recreating the look that your hairdresser so effortlessly achieved. Whether it has to be just that little bit rounder, thinner or fatter, it means a new brush.

I have never knowingly thrown a brush away - they always get lost before that happens - but those I’ve managed to keep track of I religiously clean and store in a bag I have for the purpose, knowing that when the style changes again, (as it inevitably will), the right brush will be there waiting for me… though it doesn’t quite happen like that.

So instead of getting my hair wet in this never ending rain I am trawling the internet to find the perfect brush to help me achieve some more volume and have come across a few sites that supply the sort of brush I’m looking for.

Firstly there’s Denman, real workmanlike brushes that I have definitely spotted the professionals using. Then there is the amazing ghd website - not only do they supply brushes (and obviously straightners!) but their products are pretty good as well. I have incredibly fine and flat hair and I particularly rate their ghd Uplift Spray and the ghd Fat Hair Lotion which seem to have a magic effect on my lank locks.

Kent Brushes has just updated its website and they do a brush for every purpose known to man – well to me anyway. For a company that was started in 1777 they must be doing something right to still be in business!

Apart from the hair brushes, they do a great line in makeup brushes and since he was given a Kent shaving brush, my husband has been transformed from the cheap shaving foam man he used to be into a smooth – no he will never be smooth, but now his chin is and that is, as they say, a start, even if a little late!

By the time I’ve made the decision about the source of my new brush, my hairdresser, Karen will probably have decided that my new style (note we’re talking subtle changes, hair isn’t the thing to make statements with!) isn’t quite right and then - yes you’ve guessed it – it’s another new brush.
