She loves motherhood and sings a mean nursery rhyme but can’t help but wish that wearing Louboutins to soft play wasn’t considered bad form. Her favourite online stores are NetAPorter.com, Waterstones.com, SpaceNK.co.uk, & Plumo.com.
Clothing Karma
Published on Monday 15th June 2009
Karma is a funny old thing. It’s all very well sending out positive energy into the universe in the belief that it’ll be sent back to you, preferably in the form of something shiny in a pale blue box with the word Tiffany on it – but surely doing good in the expectation of getting goodness back kind of detracts from the goodness of the original thing that you’ve done, if that makes sense?
I mean, if you do something kind, or generous, or thoughtful, all the while mentally keeping tabs on how you might expect to benefit from your action, doesn’t that make you just as – perhaps even more – selfish as altruistic?
And if you claim that you really are doing these things out of the goodness of your heart, and that you’re not expecting anything back – whether that thing is a favour, or a gift, or support in a time of need – well, doesn’t that just make you a liar?
Yes, I’ve never been too sure about karma – but I am beginning to wonder if there might be such a thing as ‘clothing (klothing?) karma’.
With many of my favourite pieces off-limits during this summer of pregnancy and, let’s face it, weight gain, I’ve been passing my things onto various friends on a “keep it for now” basis – partly because they’ve been nice enough to be complimentary about my clothes (thanks ladies), and partly because it’s just too depressing to see a perfectly good Theory dress just hanging there when I know all too well that I’ll be lucky to get into it this time next year.
So you see - already, there’s been something in the arrangement for me – so when I managed to buy the most perfect piece of clothing – not once, but twice, when all that was left in stock both times (insert gleeful dance) was one medium (my size!!) I couldn’t help but think that the wardrobe gods were smiling down at me and wonder if it was somehow all linked?
Made from whisper-soft, oh-so-comfy cotton in the easiest of day-to-night shapes, my American Vintage Baton Rouge maxi (I bought it in charcoal and purple) is just beautiful in its simplicity, both for my pregnancy and beyond.
Since I bought the last of each colour, however, you’ll just have to take my word for it. Not that I want to rub anyone’s nose in it or anything –I mean, surely that would just be bad karma?
