Jill's Blog

Jill, old enough not to want to give away her age, is mother to four demanding daughters that keep her on her toes when it comes to anything retail and beauty related.

Jill much prefers shopping online to fighting the masses instore and her favourite websites include EveLom.co.uk, OkaDirect.com, TimeToSpa.co.uk, Inverawe.co.uk and FormanAndField.com (the latter two keep the men in the family smiling!).

Diary of a MOTB (part 6)

Well, everything is coming along, we have a tasting by the caterers this weekend and it would seem that the entire family is flocking home to try the tasty bits. I've spent the weekend with the friend who used to be a professional wedding video man (he is doing it as his wedding present), and at last I feel we’re beginning to bring things together.

For those of you who may be planning a wedding at home and have yet to get started there’s a great little book on the market from How To Books. It’s by Caroline Godsmark and called, not surprisingly, Planning a Wedding at Home and guides you through every step even to the ‘after party’ and advising on some traditions from around the world.

very-fine-animals-amelia.jpgI’ve been to a few weddings this year and all have been beautiful and happy occasions even though each has been very different.

One bride is an artist and wanted everything to be colourful, so Chelsea Old Church was a riot of scents and summer colour and her bridesmaids wore a wonderful concoction of green and silver polka dots, which may sound a little crazy but was brilliant. Her pageboys carried paint palettes with great aplomb although the boys didn’t wear the spots!

Because of her change of name she has had to set up a new website for her art work called Very Fine Animals and I thoroughly recommend a browse - she has a great sense of humour which is truly reflected in her work. Do look at the section called ‘Shoes’ - I dare you not to smile!

Thankfully we’ve now got all the bridesmaids sorted which has been a challenge - once we got the bride to the shop to make the ultimate decisions it was a doddle - I wonder what the next challenge will be?

P.S. Oyster Bay is beginning to lose its restorative powers - I have obviously overdosed. Any ideas for an alternative?

Diary of a MOTB (Hitting the Bottle...)

This MOTB is ready for another case of New Zealand white but it seems we're on a mission to find the right wines for the BIG DAY! If it was my decision I would have Oyster Bay – of course – and I really like Marques de Caceres or Marques de Riscal for...

Diary of a MOTB (The Dress)

We've been everywhere! The Bride stated what she did not want and then proceeded to look at just that. The H-to-be's instructions were 'No meringues, please', so obviously the wonderful ladies at Miss Bush, the wedding dress emporium to which blooming brides flock from miles around, encouraged her to try on the biggest dress...

Diary of a MOTB (part 3)

Well, I’m getting through the old Oyster Bay! Always a firm follower of the 7 o’ clock rule, a friend from South Africa sensibly pointed out the other day that it’s always 7 o’clock somewhere in the world... Wedding wise I’ve come to the conclusion that whilst recommendations are always a good starting point,...

Diary of a MOTB (part 2)...

Well we have had the first meeting with the first caterer and the husband is in shock. Thinks if he has to do this for four daughters he will never be able to stop working. He can’t actually but that is more to do with keeping him out of the house and...

Diary of a MOTB...

Well, it has finally happened, the first of the four daughters has got engaged and I’m in full flow as the mother of the bride, or MOTB as the daughters now call me, has to be. First and foremost, the wedding apparently, can’t be like all the many others she has been to... But...
