Enjoying Life In The Kitchen...

Published on Wednesday 16th July 2008

I think some things may skip a generation; my grandmother could always feed five thousand with hardly anything in the house, my mother on the other hand has always made a production out of every meal including morning coffee!

My daughters all have lots of friends and we love having them around and somehow, produce food for them all (in fact my husband has rather a reputation for force feeding). And as in lots of houses the kitchen really is the hub of the house.

If it’s not immaculate then too bad – there’s always far too much going on to be constantly tidying – I was given a cushion years ago (looking a bit tatty now) that declares ‘dull’ women have immaculate houses.’ It’s a never ending source of comfort to me.

However I am pretty fussy about my equipment and there are a few items that are invaluable. Probably the best is the Kitchen Aid – it does everything that I need it to: kneads dough, and mixes pastry, even whisks eggs for meringue to perfection. I truly believe every kitchen should have one.

I’m the proud owner of both the vacuum cleaner which is so multi-tasking it must be female, and also the Thermomix, white sauces really are best made in one of these, it not only mixes them it cooks them as well!

But my most recent discovery for the kitchen that I really wanted to share with you is a bit less of an investment but no less worthwhile. It’s a little gem of a rolling pin which actually rolls the motto ‘Made in England’ into the pastry. How fun is that! It was the perfect gift from a girl friend.

Anyway back to the Aga for me - oops I forgot to mention that!
