Fairtrade Fortnight. Are you doing your bit? Published on Monday 26th February 2007
Fairtrade seems to be the word on everyone’s lips at the moment and we keep being told that various retailers from Topshop to Anyahindmarch are supporting the issue. The now annual Fairtrade Fortnight starts today (26th February to 11th March) and if you keep hearing the word ‘fairtrade’ but don’t really know what it means I thought I’d explain it for you.
Fair trade products are products that are fairly traded (for a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards).
A huge amount of what we buy is produced by The Third World and many of those who produce and grow it don’t make enough money to live. Fairtrade ensures that they get a stable price for it - what they’re paid should cover their costs and allow them to reinvest in the community and in their future.
Remember that supporting fairtrade really does mean that you will make a difference.
So change today, make the switch and buy fairtrade when you can.
