Great Expectations Are All Around... Published on Thursday 20th March 2008
Everyone seems to be having a baby right now (most awaited on my list was Ralf, son of Brittique founder, Nicole Bremner). When I was expecting I saw pregnant women everywhere but this was an illusion especial to my situation. However, since I’m not having a baby anytime soon and still receive a ‘new arrival’ message every week, I guess the conclusion is that the population must be thriving.
What a VERY special time it is for these people – joy, celebration, excitement, no sleep, no routine (except that dictated by the new arrival) and an introduction to unconditional love and attachment.
It’s also a time for others (a.k.a. us bystanders) to give... hopefully just nice presents and good wishes, rather than advice. Nothing is more infuriating/anxiety-provoking/confusing to new parents than hearing ‘the best way’ to do this or that.
Anyway back to the presents and good wishes thing: so I’ve had to come up with both in large doses recently and in the process I’ve found some truly inspiring sources.
The most unique, fun-loving things like hand-painted frames, appliqué bodysuits and world’s softest snugly toys at alittlesquare ; newborn’s basics formed into the sweetest posy at BabyBlooms ; gorgeously made, traditional outfits from Rachel Riley ; and, if silver is a must, then Tiffany’s still wins hands down.
Also, gifts tend to be aimed at baby and mum (note: I think flowers for Mum is lame…who has the time or interest at that point? Send a credit note for a good night nurse instead) and fathers tend to get left out.
Well, don’t be guilty of discrimination – there are some great books out there (Crouching Father Hidden Toddler is a good one), the night nurse idea applies equally well here and if all else fails, then the sure shot winner is a hamper from Beverly Hills Bakery .
I talk from experience: I got one when I had my second child and, in all honesty, each muffin/cookie represented one notch up in mood for my sleep-deprived, taking-care-of-clingy-kid-#1 husband. Big time.
