Heads Up On Autumn / Winter Trends... Published on Thursday 7th February 2008
Unless you work in the world of fashion you’re still thinking about your current winter wardrobe.
But the fashion season kicked off last week with the Mecedes-Benz New York Fashion Week so with some careful buying now you could still pick up some key autumn/winter 08 trends in the sales. Whilst it’s too early to pick out all the key looks, here are some early contenders.
Feathers - Whether they be on a hat or woven onto the bodice or hem of a garment, feathers fluttered along the catwalks and were worn by many a fashion forward fashionista in attendance at the shows.
But the bird theme isn’t limited to feathers - bird brooches and pendants are also big news. Hunt down Emma Cook’s 2007 Winter Collection for some fabulous birdie inspired designs.
Uniform chic – This time it’s not about military but about school uniforms. Whilst anything reminiscent of school years sends me cold, we’re just talking pleated mini skirts and plaid mini tunic style dresses teamed with exposed zip jackets and over the knee boots.
Baggy denim – Fashion always goes from one extreme to another and just when you were getting comfortable with the skinnys, it’s time to make friends with the baggies.
(We don’t think that skinny jeans are over, they’re just another look, so don’t throw them out just yet.)
But for next season look at high waisted, wide legged jeans or the newer jodhpur or “carrot” styles – oversized at the hip then tapering in at the ankle.
Louise Amstrup’s Summer Collection offers a fabulous example of this style (pictured).
Well waisted – The waist continues to be a focal point, perfect for the hourglass figure. Continue to hunt out large belts and corsets and stick with higher waisted skirts and trousers. However...
Flapper style – You don’t have a waist worth nipping in? That’s fine because the catwalk also showed flapper style dresses with straighter silhouettes. Many of these flapper dresses were adorned with beading and feathers.
And that’s just a taster...
