How About A Bit Of Big Apple.... Published on Thursday 26th July 2007
Need a summer sun break and time away from endless grey skies and drizzle?
What about some cheap designer shopping and end of season sales? Tempted? Book yourself a ticket to my new city, New York!
Yes I’ve just relocated to Manhattan and with temperatures hovering around 30C and the dollar worth less than £0.50, it should be your number one holiday destination.
So listen up...
One thing that isn't cheap in New York is accommodation. Rather than staying right in Manhattan, find a friend or try the Hyatt Regency Jersey City hotel right on the Hudson River. Rooms with a beautiful city view are available for just $199 and what could be more romantic than catching a water taxi across the river after a wonderful dinner or a show on Broadway?
Hotel booked now the next problem, what to pack. The daytime uniform among young ladies is strapless flowing tops over short shorts, flips flops and giant sunglasses. If short shorts aren’t your thing, a strapless dress is equally hip. But keep packing to a minimum because you’ll need the luggage space to cart back your new purchases!
First stop for young American summer classics is Abercrombie & Fitch. While it’s now available in London, like most things, it’s half the price in the US. Don’t let the loud music and Amazonian beauties put you off, as long as you’re under a US 6 (UK 12) A&F has something for everyone.
I tend to skip Macy’s (unless your man wears Polo chinos as his corporate attire – if so stock up on all the beige and navy pants he needs for just $69.95 each) and head straight for Saks on Fifth Avenue.
After all that shopping relax at a local Le Pain Quotidien for fabulous coffee (hard to find in NY, trust me) and cake, head to Cosi for a quick super sized salad or sandwich or visit trendy hang out Pastis. Who knows who you’ll be rubbing shoulders with.
