Number 4 daughter turns 18 in about ten days time. Having been away I’ve done little about it and am now in a complete blue funk about what to give her.

Never being one to go for the fake when the real label is on offer I dread to think what the present list that I’ve requested will look like – one end of Sloane Street to the next I would think.

The only thing that has been organised so far is her signet ring and that’s only because we have a jeweller friend who holidays in the same place and has rushed to our rescue in return for dinner at the Chelsea Arts Club!

Heavy hints have been dropped about a new computer and that friendly fruit Apple has been linked in numerous conversations about laptops!

I did go into a shop to ask a few questions but as I couldn’t understand the answers I decided to go back to the web where a technophobe like me can find FAQ sites to help.

However it seems like Apple have got the whole thing sewn up – if you want an Apple there is only one price and that is the Apple price so my negotiating skills will not be called on.

To accompany the laptop I’ve a feeling No 4 daughter is after her first (no doubt of many) serious handbag. I’ve just been eavesdropping on a conversation between her and a friend during which they were having a fascinating chat about bags.

Apparently no-one wants a classic monogram Louis Vuitton any more because everyone would think it was a fake (god forbid they were ever seen with anything less than the real thing).

Apparently, being both British and classy, the Mulberry Mabel is the thing to have (I wouldn't mind the brown snakeskin for myself!). After years of despairing about the youngest it would appear that the worst is over and a less frenetic look may be about to emerge, she may yet turn into a butterfly.
