Let their imaginations run wild...
Published on Tuesday 24th October 2006

I remember when I was about five years old putting on a play in a friend's playroom in Wales and charging our parents £1 a ticket to come and watch and another 50p for a program. Thank goodness for J R Rowling and Harry Potter, without which, computer games might have further cannibalised the use of a child's imagination.

With that in mind, you'll understand why I'm championing retailers such as Wild Windmill which sells toys to help their imaginations run wild.

As a child, I know how much I'd have loved a Puppet Theatre (£185) like this.

It includes two backdrops with a pirate and castle theme, along with a side entrance stage door, and will provide them with hours of fun.

In a similar theme is this fabulous star spangled Wizard's Tent (£110).

Be it as a little theatre, play house, bed canopy or tent in the garden, it's just the place for adventures.

I also just adore this pink Gingerbread Cottage (£229).

It's beautifully embroidered and is the ultimate playhouse for any little girl.

And I don't think there are many children who wouldn't have fun in one of these little pedal cars.

Girls will love this divine pink Fantasy Plane (£249) and, like something out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Brum The Superhero Pedal Car (£198) is a best seller and you can see why.

But the 'piece de resistance' from Wild Windmill has got to be The Rivelin Rocking Horse (£1499).

OK, so it's pretty pricey but it's also one of the most beautifully traditional toys a child can own - in fact it's not really a toy it's more of a family heirloom - something wonderful to pass down through generations.
