Moss for Topshop - it's on my mind...
Published on Monday 30th April 2007

kate moss topshopI’m sorry to say that I’m being a bit indecisive. At least I think I am. I just can’t quite make up my mind about Kate Moss’ collection for Topshop and whether I rate it or not, let alone whether I agree with it or not.

What is it about high street stores at the moment – can’t they sell their own label anymore? Stella McCartney for H&M started the trend with bang, Madonna for the same store was a bit of a flop, now it’s Kate’s turn and Lily Allen, amongst others, is soon to be joining the ranks. It seems it’s our obsession with celebrity and the celebrity in the clothes that sells them, rather than the clothes themselves (although that didn’t even do it for Madonna, and I’m a diehard Madonna fan as much as the next girl).

But back to Moss for Topshop, the big burning question and my first gripe. Since when has Kate Moss been a fashion designer? – Slightly belittles all those slogging away at St Martins.

Revolutionary? Creative? Unique? I don’t think so. Moss’ collection looks like it’s been done before. Aren’t those waist coats, hot pants and shift dresses exact replicas of what we’ve seen her in in every magazine under the sun? And shouldn’t fashion brands all have their own distinct personality? Shouldn’t they all be instantly recognisable? Isn’t that what makes a brand a brand? Isn’t that what makes Marni, Marni and Pucci, Pucci?

But then maybe I’m contradicting myself. I tend to agree with those that proclaim that couture has had it’s day and I firmly believe that fashion should above all, be wearable. And contradiction and rights and wrongs aside, I do actually quite like Moss’ collection. Ok so I won’t be donning the hot pants that only she and the likes of my 13 year old sister can get away with but I’m a sucker for basics and the £12 white vest certainly appeals, as does the floral print shirt and that waistcoat…

And whilst you wouldn’t catch me queuing up for the collection (although I confess I did queue up for my Anya Hindmarch I’m Not A Carry A Bag) I might just be logging on for the odd thing. That’s if the stock ever makes it online! I’ll keep you posted.

Looks like I might have just made up my mind…
