Mulled Wine & Christmas Candles... Published on Thursday 6th December 2007
Smell evokes the deepest of emotions and at this time of year nothing get’s you in the festive spirit quite like smell. Mulled wine at a drinks party; pine needles as you come in from the cold; the warming smell of mince pies – or if your household is anything like ours - the burning smell of mince pies...
But my favourite, come Christmas time, is the smell of gently burning Christmas Candles.
I’ve been lucky enough to sample a fair few of late. I was given my first festive candle at the Jaeger press day in July and I waited patiently – just occasionally sniffing the box - until December 1st before lighting it.
The combination of orange and spices did not disappoint – and it wasn’t long before I found myself reaching for the mulled wine spices from the back of the cupboard.
Next came Natural Magic – the mother of all home fragrance candles.
There’s nothing like a bit of Natural Magic to get you in the mood. Their Christmas candle has the scent of warming cinnamon, ginger, mandarin and tonka bean – they say it reminds you of Christmas cakes baking the moment you light it - I’m inclined to agree. (£1 from each goes to the the Make-A-Wish children's foundation so you’re doing your bit too).
Needless to say The White Company has come up trumps. Their Ultimate (5-wick) Winter Candle has a burning time of over 80 hours and is filled with their famous cinnamon, clove and orange-scented wax.
With Christmas candles aplenty I’ve been in my element. Any others that caught my attention in particular? Diptyque’s of course and The Chateau Company’s Olargues – hand poured in the UK, this candle is simply dreamy. The classic combination of orange and cinnamon had me reaching for the Christmas Carol CD as well as the mulled wine...
