My Kind of Luxury...
Published on Friday 8th June 2007

Rumour has it David Beckham wears a new pair of boxer shorts every day. At a dinner party last night, a girlfriend said she’d love that (clean panties in her case that is, not boxers) if money was no object. For me it would be a chauffeur all day every day, never having to take the tube again, priority queuing in every situation where a queue is unavoidable… but my real luxury if money were no object? Someone to make my bed with clean sheets every day.

There’s nothing better than a long bath and slipping clean tootsies between the freshest of sheets. But in my case, unlike David Beckham or my girlfriend, it wouldn’t be about new, infact I rather dislike the feeling of new sheets, it would just be about the most fabulous linen freshly cleaned.

Fine linen isn’t a luxury in my mind, it’s an absolute must. There’s plenty of linen on the high street that looks perfectly nice but it’s how it feels that’s important. Fine linen feels like heaven and the mark of the finest, is linen that gets better with each wash.

For me there are two options and two options alone: linen or cotton (I won’t even utter the ‘s’ word in this context).

My husband and I were given a set of linen sheets as a wedding present and they are absolute heaven. They get better and softer with every wash – so much so that I comment on them about once a week. If you haven’t tried linen I would highly recommend a visit to the Volga Linen Company . It’s all 100% pure linen and their monogrammed pillowcases with intertwined initials make a wonderful wedding present.

Their cotton sheets and pillow cases are made with the best Egyptian cotton and by the finest craftsmen in Europe. It's bed linen that feels so soft one can’t quite put it into words.

And of course it’s got to be white. All of it.
