New Found Friends...
Published on Wednesday 28th February 2007

Long before the elasticated jeans are begrudgingly purchased and the bump starts to take over, pregnant ladies can’t fail to notice one big physical change that’s quite literally under their noses. Boobs, breasts, bosoms, tits, bazookas, whatever your preferred term - they demand your attention, and not just because they’re tender as hell.

Women who previously didn’t even have a glimpse of a cleavage see a definite advantage to being pregnant once they’ve been introduced to their New Best Friends. For this reason alone, pregnancy can be a wonderful thing.

Just last week we fitted and styled someone who’d never even worn a bra before and regarded her chest with disdain. Now, at 18 weeks pregnant, she’s wearing low-cut tops and showing it off. Fakies without the silicon - what’s not to like?

amoralia keeley blog picTraditionally, though, this up-side of pregnancy has been marred by the maternity bra market. We’ve been forced to trade in our Made by Niki Limited Edition for sports bras and “boulder holders” that smother your cleavage and defiantly poke out above your plunging necklines. No more. Maternity lingerie has been transformed in this country, online at least, by two independent and innovative companies, Amoralia and Emily B . (Although arguably The Elle Macpherson Maternelle range started this trend and Agent Provocateur have followed suit.)

The brilliant thing about Amoralia and Emily B bras - apart from the fact that they look stunning - is that they attempt to shape your bust as if it was underwired even though it’s not, and so they offer definition as well as support.

Although - contrary to popular myth - you can wear underwired bras during pregnancy, you have to be extremely careful that the wiring is not pressing on your breast tissue, particularly by your underarm. This means as you get even bigger - yep, it happens! - you could end up updating your undies every month or two, which is a hefty price to pay.

Spotting the desire of pregnant women to still look stylish and desirable undressed as well as dressed, these two labels also have matching knickers for their bras, in thongs, french knickers and hipster briefs.

And although you’re only going to wear them for a handful of months at any one time, if it means that you still feel like you, rather than someone who’s surrendering to frumpdom, it’s got to be worth it.
