New Year, New Makeup Ideas....
Published on Thursday 24th January 2008

Out with the old and in with the new, and all that jazz. Why not combine the new you (now you’re on your New Years detox and exercise plan) with a new makeup look?

So the pre-christmas party look was definitely a focus on lips. Bold and beautiful to attract those Christmas kisses. New year brings a total reverse with the makeup trends all showing the natural look on the lips with the emphasis on the eyes. This, I have to say, is my favourite way round. I believe anyone can carry off bold and bright eye colours if they dare. Or if you don’t want to go for colour, a smokey defined eye is timelessly always sexy.

Don’t over pluck or over emphasise but always keep them tidy; make it part of your routine to just run a brush through them to keep them neat. It’s best not try to change the shape of your brows – just keep them tidy and thin them out to stop the bushy effect.

Once you’re done with the brows it’s time to experiment with a little colour. If you’re unsure about using brighter bolder colours, maybe start with getting yourself a bright eyeliner and pair it with a more neutral shadow.

For green eyes I love an emerald green or khaki; for blue a baby blue for day and a sapphire for the night; for brown eyes so many colours work but a deep purple can be different. Nars have some bright creamy textured eyeliners that are perfect for blending.

Be sure to line from the outside in, never quite reaching the inside – go about 80% of the way - fully line and it’ll make your eye look smaller.

Top Tip: Always line under the lashes at the bottom of your eye – not inside the eye. This is so important as it widens your eyes and the eye makeup will last longer as it doesn’t have to fight with the moisture from your eye. It also minimises ‘end-of-the-day-smudging’.

nars duo eyeshadow island feverIf you fancy a brighter eyeshadow colour as well then I’d suggest an eyeshadow palette with two tones if possible – or two similar single colours – one darker than the other. This will help create a more textured look and soften the impact of the colour. I tend to use the lighter shade on the inside, the darker on the outside and then blend with my fingertip in the middle. Nars’ Island Fever (pictured right) is lots of fun.

Then take the lighter shade and put a little bit under the eye, nearest the nose as this really finishes the look nicely. Sounds complicated when it’s all written down but I promise in practice it takes seconds and creates a great look.

So I challenge you to be bold and experiment with eye colour. Put those neutrals to the back of your makeup drawer, upgrade your current collection with some new shades and feel confident in creating!
