Painting the Town Red
Published on Thursday 11th February 2010
My sartorial task of the month is seeking out colourful alternatives both for me and for Babes with Babies. Black is chic, slimming and can be smart. However it drains people’s complexions badly and so can be dull and wrong for a tired new mum. Dark chocolate, plum or navy are all striking and more flattering alternatives.
And my office at the moment is awash with so many beautiful colours it looks like the MAC make up counter exploded rather gorgeously. It’s about finding one that looks good against your complexion. “The best colour in the whole world, is the one that looks good, on you” (Chanel, naturally).
My favourite colour for now is simple and it’s red. Not the best colour for baby’s rooms (definitely not calming) but a great colour to wear. It’s the colour of energy.
And a great colour to exude confidence. Wear to stand out and feel strong. There’s nothing like a rich, delicious red to get you in the winter party mood and look supremely confident. And sexy. It may feel obvious but Chris de Burgh is not the only man to have a bit of a thing for a Lady in Red.
It’s also a colour of drama and no wonder that it works so well on the bottom of Louboutins. Above all, it’s a great colour to give you energy and a little lift.
My favourite five red ‘lifts’ at the mo:
1. Inspi(Red): Shopping with a conscience thanks to Gap’s Red collection (which is sadly not online).
2. The Little Red Dress – killer dress, scary price tag.
3. A bag of beauty: Lift an outfit with a gorgeous bag; red leather is so luscious. The Mia Baby Changing Bag (Cate Blanchett’s choice) is our top selling bag at the moment.
4. Best red lips – award-winning lipstick 3 Customs Colour in Ballet Russe from Cult Beauty. If there’s one thing you buy this season, let this be it.

Pick-Me-Ups for Tired Eyes
Wednesday 3rd February 2010
Julia Roberts, mum-of-three (and quite a big movie star) puts it so well: ‘I think the second meanest thing someone can say is ‘You look tired’. Sometimes I’m so completely cream crackered I feel as lacking in sparkle as a horribly warm and flat G&T. This week some disturbed nights...
Time Management Part One: On Frogs & Filing
Tuesday 10th November 2009
Last night in the bath I tried to persuade Baby Rosie to loan me one of her toys – an extremely cute, bug-eyed frog. She was extremely reluctant (‘but I need it you see mummy’). So instead I’ve printed out the word FROG in a beautiful font and put it up on my...
Travelcalm (The Terror of Travelling with Tots)
Wednesday 9th September 2009
I’ve just noticed that more and more of my friends are holidaying in England this year. They vehemently claim that it’s all part of their new sense of carbon responsibility & linked to exchange rates etc. However, I’ve realised that the vast majority of them are all parents of small, shouty infants. The...
Working from Home
Wednesday 29th July 2009
What to wear working from home... In theory I could be naked. Part of the fun of having an internet business is that I spend most of my working day on the phone or on the computer in my own office so not very many people see me. However, my lovely nanny (and...
