Picnic paraphernalia that wont let the side down...
Published on Tuesday 25th July 2006

For me, you really can't beat an English summer's day, a long leisurely picnic and a nice bottle of rosé. But if there's one thing you should do, it's make sure you have decent picnic paraphernalia.

Mouldy old rugs with a bit of last year's egg mayonnaise stuck to them won't do. Ensure you have something attractive to lay yourself and your picnic on. Cabane do a Pyrenean wool picnic blanket in white, milk or dark chocolate colours that come with ultra stylish leather handles ideal for carrying around.

10 They also do a fabulous classic blue and white striped picnic rug, matching mattress cushions and neck rolls. If you like the French look I love (!), there are more matching rugs and cushions available at Cox and Cox , as well as a really useful empty picnic basket which you can fill with whatever.

The wonderful Cath Kidston does fun picnic kit. Folding chairs, floor cushions, rugs and picnic baskets all come in her pretty and bright signature style.

For smart and colourful picnicware head to Heals , or for acrylic kit (so much easier and lighter to carry), to Graham and Green . John Lewis also has a good range of picnic ware and baskets.

For picnic kit, hampers and baskets that are quintessentially English, you must visit The Picnic Shop .

11 They do a fantastic range of baskets tailored to suit wine, cheese or tea lovers. There's a luxury basket containing fine bone china and baskets especially designed for hunting, fishing and golfing enthusiasts.

Life's A Picnic make wonderfully fun traditional picnic baskets lined with vintage fabrics and complete with vintage tablewear and linen. They come in a range of colours and are ideal for a romantic picnic for two in the English countryside.
