Pregnancy & The Sun...
Published on Tuesday 31st July 2007
Despite the awful weather we’ve had to date this year, it is set to improve and pregnancy in the summer can be an awful struggle. If you’re feeling the heat then here are a few tips that when I was pregnant I found eased the symptoms nicely.
If you’re lucky enough not to be cooped up in an office or in a grey part of the country then put some time aside to sit back and relax in the sun.
Sun screen is more important than ever; pregnancy brings with it an increase in pigmentation or staining of the skin (especially around the face called chloasma) and covering up and protecting will help reduce this drastically.
During hot weather pregnant women feel extra hot – wear a big floppy hat (pictured, M&S) and some large shades (the SheerLuxe editors have pulled out a great selection in their holiday shop) and you’ll feel instantly cooler.
When choosing what to wear consider layering. A pair of comfortable trousers (such as Soft Pull-on trousers or hipster from Isabella Oliver) that are loose fitting and can be co-ordinated with a range of tops are a maternity wardrobe must-have – as are comfortable flip flops.
Swelling is common especially in late pregnancy and this is often enhanced with hot weather. Gentle swelling around the ankles is normal (another reason for flip flops) and after a long day can be eased with a gentle massage (try our “where’s my feet?” massage oil).
For a day out – pack a big bag (pictured, Cath Kidston) with lots of water (staying hydrated is more important than ever when you’re pregnant and in the sun) and a good book. It’s still worth avoiding extremes of heat and using shade wisely - it makes reading and relaxing with bump much easier.
Just remember to be prepared and you’ll find the whole experience a lot more enjoyable!
