Kate's Blog

Kate is a university student and style zealot. A fan of Carrie Bradshaw, Gwenyth Paltrow and all things Olsen, she thinks fashion should be individual and turns to blouses and blazers for her stable wear. Kate loves New York, Mark Rothko, big words, and, of course, all things stylish.

Despite coveting the collections on Net-a-Porter, she relies on Topshop, loves Urban Outfitters, and thinks ASOS is thoroughly addictive.

Pyjama Party

Published on Wednesday 18th March 2009

Thanks to Dolce and Gabbana, as well as other A-List designers, staying in your pyjamas all day is no longer reserved for lazy Sundays and heiresses, but the new way to embrace one of Spring’s bravest trends. Instead of turning to nighties as inspiration, designers have instead embraced a more sophisticated approach to bedtime costume. It appears that this season, comfort is key without sacrificing on chic.

asos-silk-pleated-collar-lace-trim-blouse.jpgWhen I first witnessed the Dolce & Gabbana adverts with the waifish models lounging around in pyjamas, I of course assumed that they’d come out with a new collection of lingerie (although I must admit, given Dolce’s love of animal prints and all things vampy, I would have expected a much more provocative night time design than the prudish onesies these girls were boasting).

Only on closer inspection did I realise that this bed-ready look was definitely meant for day and even, dare I say, the office (one step at a time...).

Now before I go any further, let me explain that I’m not endorsing the “I just rolled out of bed and walked out without walking past a mirror and if my mother saw me right now she would be so disappointed” look, but I do think that we can all learn a lot from the chicly glorified bedroom attire being strutted down so many of the Spring 09 runways.

Since the Dolce and Gabbana’s complete bedroom look is a bit too extreme for day to day, I’ve decided to go about achieving a similar vibe through the use of bedroom-inspired blouses. This trend is a great excuse to indulge in flowy blouses and loose hair without feeling guilty about the lack of effort.

Get inspired at Net-a-Porter, who can supply you with one of D&G’s tamer incarnations, or alernatively, Elizabeth and James offer a cool PJ-esque blouse in the light blue that is destined to be the colour of the season (much to this fashion enthusiast’s dismay, as light blue isn’t the most becoming colour on me). Both of these tops offer the PJ look without the worry of looking like a ninny that forgot to dress for a dinner party, or worse, a ninny who tried too hard and still fell short. I intend to get the look at ASOS, with their delightfully diaphanous Silk Blouse.

In conclusion, taking the pyjama look too literally should be left to models and the bedroom, but turning to nightwear for daytime inspiration is a great way to be comfortable, and stylish. Despite its lazy nature, this look is effortlessly chic.
