Romance on the open road... Published on Wednesday 16th August 2006
Oliver Sweeney's story is an endearing one. He had a humble upbringing in Leicester from where he moved to London securing a job as a shop-boy in a gentleman's cobblers in the West End. Rising through the ranks, Oliver went on to become a specialist in the luxury footwear and accessories arena.
Oliver launched his own label in 1990 - in what was in initial link up with none other than Harrods - (nothing like starting at the top!), establishing himself as a classic shoe maker with a 'twist'. My favourite of all his styles is the Kamanchi brown snuff suede loafer - I'm all for the classic look for men and this is about as classic as he gets.
Sweeney has also moved into the accessories market with attaché cases, belts, gloves and wallets and I think he does some fantastic pieces - men's accessories can be really dull. His Stingray Wallet in Kiwi or Blue is smart but fun.
Oliver says he found his spiritual home in Italy - you can see this in the quality of the leather he uses. He also drew his inspiration for this fabulous limited edition leather covered motorcycle helmet from the early Italian racing scene.

With only 100 being made, it's a bit of a collectors item and well worth snapping up - and even if you aren't a biker (although if you are, it conforms to European Safety requirements), you'll appreciate its impeccable craftsmanship - just hang it decoratively on your wall and admire its beauty. It's available from late August / early September.
Go on, treat yourself, or him.
