Natalie's Blog

Natalie is part of SheerLuxe’s editorial team. When she’s not dreaming/hinting/talking about Chanel 2.55s, she loves wolfing down La Duree macaroons, drawing waifish girls in very expensive outfits, writing her blog, Canned Fashion, and hosting dinner parties at her flat.

That’s when she’s not shopping, of course, which takes up approximately 89% of her time. Her favourite online haunts are Topshop.com, Net-a-Porter.com, Myla.com and FeelUnique.com (thank goodness for tax-free Touche Eclat).

Sensible Shoes: Every Girl's Nightmare

Published on Friday 15th January 2010

I remember reading somewhere that Sarah Jessica Parker’s feet were ‘made’ for Manolos, in so far as her towering arch mirrored the steep incline on those spindly little shoes. I muse upon SJP’s ballerina tootsies with seething jealousy, whilst glancing at my own, flat-as-planks-of-MDF feet.

sheactive-fitflop-snugger-black.jpg When most women develop bunions, at least they have something to show for it – the memories of prancing around town on stilettos so high they’d make any self-respecting podiatrist wince. I, on the other hand, at the tender age of twenty two, have nothing but my lack of instep to blame for the unsightly nobules sprouting from my toe joint. Glamour factor: zero.

After a few weeks of feeling like an eighty year old biddy every time I announced, ‘My bunions hurt’, I booked an appointment with the doctor. ‘First of all, you shouldn’t be wearing those’, he sneered, pointing at my cosy black Uggs.

I was ordered to take my shoes off and stand facing the other way whilst he examined my gait. He mumbled something and noisily prodded at his keyboard, before flinging a sheet of paper at me. ‘I’ve referred you to the podiatric clinic’, he snapped.

I asked him what footwear he recommended in the mean time. ‘When I was a boy’, he mused, ‘There were these wooden, sandal-type Scholl things’. I sensed he wasn’t referring to Chanel’s SS10 platform clogs, and began to panic as I imagined going to press events wearing orthopaedic shoes. Then came the realisation that I’d have to give up my beloved Uggs.

I left the surgery in quite a state (forgetting all about my bunion pain) when I remembered FitFlop’s Snugger boots - the cosiness of an Ugg with a structured enough sole for pensioners-in-22-year-old bodies like me. Not quite SJP territory, but at least I won’t be extradited from fashion week altogether...

"Forget the ugly shoes and get the bunion surgery. I did and they're all gone. No pain, no bunions, perfect feet. Its really not that bad. You will need to wear a funny shoe for about a week or 2 but my doctor had me walking out of the hospital a few hours after surgery. Its done as an in-patient procedure."

"Just curious if you did the procedure via NHS or a private doctor? I have bunions and was unsure about having the surgery until I read your comment. "
