Lucy's Blog

Lucy is part of SheerLuxe's editorial team and lives in Fulham, London. A fan of overpriced hair products that promise ‘miracles’ and little black ankle boots, she loves nothing more than a long lie in followed by poached eggs and a pile of fashion magazines.

When she’s not giving in to her unwavering shopping addiction, Lucy loves getting lost in a good book, gorging on pick and mix at the cinema and catching up with friends and family.

Lucy regularly relies on Topshop, Urban Outfitters, and ASOS for quick fashion fixes as well as Space NK for those can’t live without products, and can’t resist Graham & Green for bits and pieces for her flat.

The Big Chill

Published on Wednesday 20th January 2010

Going to the cinema on a Sunday night is one of my favourite weekend rituals . For me, there’s no better remedy to the Sunday night blues than a bucket of E-numbers and the latest blockbuster. However last Sunday’s visit was something of an anomaly to the rule. After reading Cormac McCarthy’s The Road I’ve been looking forward to seeing the much-hyped film adaptation for a while now and went to see it ASAP after its release last Friday.

asos-whistles-whistles-oversize-cable-hand-knit-jumper.jpg Having read the book, I was under no illusions; the plot is bleak to say the least. The apocalyptic setting, grey landscape, heart-wrenching story and onslaught of baddies make it exciting, yet thoroughly draining, viewing. However it was only after I left the cinema that I was faced with the truly terrible and depressing.

After watching a film that revolves around an unnamed apocalypse that means the world is left freezing cold and slowly disintegrating, I was faced with the headline ‘Big Freeze Set to Kill 60,000’ sprawled across the front of a tabloid.

One of the more melodramatic headlines I’ve ever seen I admit, but after quite a few desperate phone calls to my mother recently for fear I might die of chilblains, the promise of even more chilly weather has left me longing for sunshine and sand between my toes.

A tropical getaway looks unlikely for the foreseeable future so instead I’m being a true Brit and making do. Whilst the rest of the SheerLuxe team seem to be looking forward to holidays, detoxes and work out regimes, I’m contemplating hibernation dressed head to toe in thermals.

Father Christmas predicted the big freeze with great accuracy and very kindly gave me Hush’s cosy cardigown which has been going some way in fighting the cold come bedtime (my electric blanket has been going the rest), whilst Tabio’s amazing selection of ribbed, fairisle and cable knit tights have turned me into a hosiery fanatic before you can say Nora Batty.

The ‘big freeze’ , as the press have dubbed the freakishly cold recent weather, thankfully means my three favourite winter textures, fur, sheepskin and leather, are everywhere right now. Preen in the sale is almost too good to be true, especially when it’s this leather flying jacket trimmed in warm mongolian fur. Top it off with this and you’re ready to tackle the arctic, let alone the high street.

It’s no secret that the SheerLuxe girls are slightly obsessed with all things cashmere and, as I’m now a permanent part of the team, I think I’ve already been bitten by the bug. After just a week in the office I’m seriously contemplating taking up knitting and am lusting madly after Me&Em’s beautiful cashmere polo dress and, more realistically, this oversize cable knit jumper dress, both of which are true investments for anyone with a lizard-like disposition like myself.

So with my boiler going full pelt and feet swathed in several pairs of socks, I’m quite content with ignoring the upcoming onslaught of Spring Summer pastels, frills and florals for a few more weeks and indulging in some good old wittering about the weather instead.
