My Perfect Pup... Published on Monday 16th July 2007
You might know by now that I’m mad about pooches. At a recent family lunch party I spent more time in the dog pen with the Spaniel puppies then I did catching up with cousins. When it came to leaving, I popped a pup in my bag just to test the waters and see my husband’s reaction.
I’ve been winging about getting a dog for years now and after babysitting my step mother’s adorable but extremely active pooch it rather put me off - until I have more time at least – someday I’d love a big black lab and a house in the country too.
But for now I'm firmly ensconced in London and the Spaniels had got me thinking so I put the idea to my husband once again. ‘Honey,’ he said ‘if you want a dog then get one’. I’ve been threatening it for so long now that I know he doesn’t think I’ve got the balls.
And neither did I. Until that was, my colleague suggested I look at a Maltese Terrier. They’re small but not ratty or yappy and goodness me are they the sweetest and most lovable things I have ever seen.
Previously I’ve always been keen on Westies and Shitzhus and my husband has always said he’d quite enjoy taking a Westie round the golf course (not sure a Maltese would make 18 holes let along 9!) but perhaps he’ll settle for the fact that a Maltese is rather like a wee Westie. He could start hiring buggies and pop it on the seat beside him...
Like some kind of sign, I was shopping on the King's Road with a girlfriend on Saturday when I saw a woman trotting along with the most divine little creature. She looked a little perturbed when I stopped her (think she thought I might kidnap it) and began firing questions. After a lot of cooing and with a rather restless girlfriend in tow I walked away feeling keener than ever.
Following my ‘brief encounter’ I spent most of Sunday on EPupz.com searching for puppies and never quite got around to clearing out my wardrobe as intended.
There seem to be plenty around that are Kennel Club registered (an absolute must when buying any puppy), so it’s just a matter of finding one that’s well bred, that wants me and deciding what kind of dog bed will match my furniture. I’ve got my eye on one of these Katharine Pooley Dog Beds ...
