The Towniest of Townies...

Published on Friday 21st November 2008

According to my mother, my dog (who has just been staying with her) is a townie just like her mistress. Apparently she was somewhat apprehensive about wading through the wet leaves in the park (who could blame her) but was right at home when they hit the King’s Road...

Ok so she does take after her mistress.

That said, I have just spent another weekend in the Cotswolds. Hubby is more than a keen race goer to say the least and last weekend was one of Cheltenham’s busiest.

gcc blog oka cottage After a pretty fruitless day (why do the bookies have all the luck?!) we retreated to a friend’s cottage in a little village called Oddington. The cottage is, I have to say, the most idyllic cottage I have EVER laid eyes on. So idyllic is it, that it makes the towniest of townies want to leave it all behind and head to the country.

It does help that the friend in question has quite simply the most exquisite taste when it comes to all thing interiors related. The cottage is a walking advert for The White Company (bed linen check, towels check, candles check), OKA (bedside tables check), Dormy House (too much to check), Jo Malone and Daylesford.

The fragrance of Daylesford Grapefruit Leaf and The White Company Flowers candles hit you as you walk in the door.

the white company flowersWe arrived to tea and cake, a roaring fire and Strictly Come Dancing, followed by a delicious supper in the local village pub.

Of course, I slept like a log. Then, on Sunday morning, we popped into Daylesford (Moreton-in-Marsh is literally down the road), peered at David and Serena Linley having breakfast, bought a few goodies (including a Grapefruit Leaf candle) and reluctantly headed back to town.

So sad was I to leave the cottage in the Cotswolds behind that I popped out to get myself a copy of Country Living so I could read about exactly what I was missing.

But, come Monday morning, I was extremely happy that I had a ten minute walk to work rather than a two hour commute. For now I think I’ll stick with town life. The gym, sushi and an array of bars that serve me Mojitos is still really rather appealing...
