Sarah's Blog

A freelance journalist from Sydney, Sarah lives in South East London with her husband Dave and three children, Phoenix, Cassian and Leon. She likes raspberries, stars, lilies, butterflies, Blondie, Jack Bauer and the smell of coriander and garlic when it hits the pan.

She loves motherhood and sings a mean nursery rhyme but can’t help but wish that wearing Louboutins to soft play wasn’t considered bad form. Her favourite online stores are NetAPorter.com, Waterstones.com, SpaceNK.co.uk, & Plumo.com.

Two Thousand and Zen

Published on Wednesday 27th January 2010

Almost impossible to believe that 12 months ago, I was expressing my intention to dub the year ‘Two Thousand and Wine’. Things didn’t exactly work out that way (hello, baby Leon!) but this year, I’m determined that nothing – not even a new baby - will stand in the way of having a year of calm & tranquility . Welcome to Two Thousand and Zen.

amazon 24 dvd sarah r blog Of course, starting the year by watching Day 7 of the utterly addictive 24 may not have been the best move to this end, since my darling husband and I are incapable of watching fewer than 3 episodes in a night and then going to bed far too late and totally wired.

Are things getting out of hand when I put on the Baby Bjorn and pretend to myself that it’s a bullet proof vest? When a session at the soft play centre - crawling on my elbows through tunnels, scrambling up ropes, squeezing through tight spaces - becomes a secret mission with Jack Bauer? At least I’m not alone - my friend and fellow addict H admitted that she’d told someone she was going ‘off comm’ the other day,

I’m glad, in a way, that we only have a few episodes left to watch since it means that I may actually get to bed before 2am in the foreseeable future. Trust me, not only does lack of sleep wreak havoc with your complexion (thank goodness for Benefit Moonbeam) but it also does little to make starting the day with 3 small children any easier (thank goodness for the Espressivo!).

Also key to starting the day well – and another baby step on the path to that longed-for Zen – is being able to dress quickly and, preferably, with some modicum of coordination. I can’t imagine that I’ll ever be one of those people who lays out the night before, but I’m pretty excited about being able to locate tights and knickers in the semi-dark, thanks to my hanging organiser. It may not change my life, but it’ll go some way to making sure that my day is a hell of lot better than Jack’s.
