Jill's Blog

Jill, old enough not to want to give away her age, is mother to four demanding daughters that keep her on her toes when it comes to anything retail and beauty related.

Jill much prefers shopping online to fighting the masses instore and her favourite websites include EveLom.co.uk, OkaDirect.com, TimeToSpa.co.uk, Inverawe.co.uk and FormanAndField.com (the latter two keep the men in the family smiling!).

What A Load Of Rubbish...

Published on Wednesday 21st May 2008

Those of you who ever read my blogs may have already concluded that I do talk a load of rubbish, so today I will justify myself by talking ABOUT rubbish instead of just spouting it

In the environmentally aware society that we live in I find myself having an ever increasing conscience that I do not do more. Here we get two recycling boxes – Purple for paper products and Green for glass and all else including plastic.

This still leaves me with a large amount of kitchen waste so where do I put it? I would put it on the garden compost heap but I’ve tried that and the dogs just love it but I don’t like the repercussions if they eat something that they shouldn’t!

wiggly wigglers beehive composterIn a Sunday magazine this weekend I discovered a website called WigglyWigglers.co.uk that makes the most attractive beehive style compost bin as unlike those ghastly green things as I am like Elle McPherson (we both have a ‘Body’ there is just more of mine in a shorter container).

But back to the supermodel of the compost world... that would be a great addition to any garden and, you could pretend to your friends that beekeeping was a hobby!

I’m now obsessed with finding more so I do a bit of research and find another great website for the ‘green’ minded - RecyclWorks.co.uk where there are two products that catch my eye, the first being the Bokashi compost bucket systems that uses Ems or effective micro-organisms to break down kitchen waste .

The same website sells a ‘Pet Poo Loo’ which can be sited in a quiet part of the garden and uses worms to break down the canine wastet. The best bit is that it only needs emptying once a year and that is for 2 medium sized dogs, so someone with a Very Small Dog would be laughing!!!

If like me you can’t stop when you start looking, then do check out SmartSoil.co.uk and watch the video – I’m sure this is the future and I’m going to forward it to my MP and the leader of the local Council.
