What to wear this Spring... Published on Tuesday 6th March 2007
Spring is here and the sun is shining (well, sometimes). I even managed to venture out without a coat over the weekend. If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to start thinking about your spring and summer wardrobe. For those with little time to read the fashion magazines, here is a quick list of the key trends this season.
Draped silhouettes: Softly sculpted shapes such as sack dresses, loose wrap dresses, blousey tops and shirts, wide leg trousers and soft skirts in neutral shades of oatmeal, putty and dusky pinks.
The mini: A truly frightening prospect for those of us with legs more sausage than supermodel, the mini is making a comeback. For the brave, tights are a good way to ease into the trend during winter. Mini-dresses are best in bold, bright prints while skirts are loose and tulip shaped.
Yellow: Always moving in extremes, after the greys of winter, summer is all about yellow. While yellow generally looks good with a hint of a tan, add yellow accessories such as a handbag, scarf or belt for a quick and easy wardrobe update.
Action wear: High tech fabrics in bright colours and even neon have made a comeback. This time around, the look is about easy wearing jersey tops and skirts with outsized parkas.
Handicraft: Stunning examples of crochet, embroidery and appliqué featured on the catwalks for spring especially in loose sack dresses. An easy style update is to add a crocheted brooch or belt to a classic black shift dress.
Metallics: Shimmery fabrics have been in style for the last couple of seasons and are set to stay on for at least a couple more. The difference is that this season has a 1980s feel that works best at evening with a sparkly dress, top shoes or bag.
Prints: Think big, bright, bold floral print dresses with romantic shapes. If the romantic look is too “pretty” a straight shift in a bright print will liven up your work wardrobe.
Body-con: The new catchphrase of the fashion set, body-con, or body conscious, is about second skin dresses with a 1980s vibe featuring edgy cutouts or bandaging. A difficult look to pull off and one that is not likely to stay for long.
Monochrome: Classic black and white is always striking. Look for stripes, bold patterns and even florals in clothing and accessories. If you buy right, this is a trend that will withstand the triviality of fashion.
Handbags: One word to describe summer’s handbags is BIG. This is not new but they are even bigger than last season. Proceed with caution though because fashion is all about extremes and once they get big, they are likely to get very small next season.
Shoes: Platforms and wedges have slowly been making a comeback. Even though you swore never to wear them again, remember how comfortable they were? I’ll be wearing them in skin, blue and yellow, very strappy and very high.
