Your key piece this summer... Published on Tuesday 8th August 2006
Kaftans are an absolute must for your summer capsule wardrobe. From the city to the beach, St Tropez to St Barts, there's nothing better to throw over your bikini when you're off for lunch, or teamed, Ã la Liz, with white trousers for an evening of cocktails and candlelight.
It's to Allegra Hicks that we owe our thanks for engineering the come back of what was just an item of 70's memorabilia. Labelled the 'Queen of kaftans' by none other than Vogue, Allegra's kaftans have a strong bohemian theme and a real sense of her own boho style and personality.
For plain simple cotton kaftans, head to Anya Hindmarch . I adore the 'Pam' in butter. It has soft ruffles around the edges and comes with the trademark Hindmarch buckle. Heidi Klein does a double layer of soft white cotton gauze with a lovely touch of Broderie Anglaise around the neck and sleeves. Great with a Stetson - very Elle and very understatedly chic.
If you like colour then kaftans get seriously fun. Melissa Odabash does some fabulous silk kaftans available in lime, blue or brown finished with a metallic trim.

For even more colour visit Sexy Kaftans . Fuchsia, turquoise, lime green and orange silks and sequins will look stunning against a golden tan. Their turquoise 'Tara' kaftan dress with embroidered sleeves will carry you through to the evening perfectly.
I adore Lotus London kaftans. They're handmade and beautifully embellished. Their Tigerlily Boho Kaftan with sequins,

their turquoise Bamboo Marbella with Swarovski crystals and their utterly sexy turquoise and brown leopard print styles are all just fabulous.
Last but not least comes Elizabeth Hurley Beach She has seriously come up trumps with this label. Her Raj kaftan is rich, opulent and inspired by the exotics of India. It comes in a range of prints and is ornately beaded around the collar. My fave is the Jaguar, it's animal print that's light, sheer and undeniably sexy.
