A giant snow white ostrich feather coat, bejewelled leather pinafore dress, thigh-climbing peep-toe leather boots and a glitter ball headdress. This was a get-up only fitting for Anna Dello Russo.
As I mentioned on
Friday a few of the SheerLuxe girls and I headed to the V&A to listen to fashion’s first lady speak on her style influences, A-List clients and of course, inimitable wardrobe.
“I don’t want to be cool, I want to be fashion” – the byline of her
blog (25, 000 hits a day, no less), a parade of her style musings and constantly outlandish creations - is the embodiment of Anna. Using clothes to “celebrate every moment”, her sense of fun and revelry in fashion is inescapable and infectious (although I’m not sure I can pull off a cherry hat). Has she ever made a 'faux pas'? "Of course! It’s all part of the process. You have to take a risk.”
A self-proclaimed “total maximalist” she likened her dressing to preparing a table with food: “fuller, higher” - which explains the sequins during the day and Turner Prize-worthy hats. A show girl; theatricality oozes from every angle - through her opulently styled shoots for ‘Vogue Japan’, to dancing on the streets for bloggers and her unending wardrobe (4,000 shoes at last count?!). Never missing a show at Fashion Week, her 5-6 outfits a day are planned 6 months in advance. What do you expect for a woman who never wears the same thing twice?
With over 20 years experience in print magazines, Anna took a considered and contemporary approach to the fast-paced world of fashion: “Fashion reflects every possible type of communication. Blogging moves things forward; in one moment you can be old fashioned.” She sees her eclectic dressing as an example for the new generation, and proclaimed that "fashion is ageless and should be about how you feel."
Question time rounded up the session. "What do you wear in bed?" “ A nightie. But a good one, of course.” And what’s next for Anna, post-Vogue? “I want to be a singer.” I don’t think there’s much chance of escaping Anna’s spotlight any time soon.
After the talk finished and complimentary Peroni and canapés were gobbled up, we headed on our way but not before we had our own couture encounter. Team SL meets Anna Dello Russo: it was the only way to end our very fashionable night out.
