Coffee With Basma Alireza
of Blossom Mother and Child
Founded in 2003 by Basma and Yasmin Alireza, Blossom Mother and Child brings high fashion and style to the expectant woman.
Basma lives in Kensington with her husband and her two children.
We had a coffee with Basma to find out what inspired her to set up her own business, dig deep about her shopping habits and discover where she likes to shop online.
What inspired you to create Blossom Mother & Child?
About five years ago my sister and I noticed there was a huge gap in the maternity market in Europe. Having been to the States where it was booming we noticed there just wasn’t an equivalent over here.
Our aim was to create a luxury product with flawless service; a one-stop shop for everything a mother needs under one roof.
What makes your product unique?
Primarily, we were revolutionary in bringing the very best luxury maternity and non-maternity clothing together. For the first time designers agreed to have their high fashion designs that were suited to pregnancy sit alongside maternity wear.
I also think the fact that we cater for everything from pre-pregnancy to after the baby is born is very important. We take the time and stress out of shopping for Mums; our shop is a stress-free haven, a place where they can find something for every occasion.
How do you get a good work/life balance?
It’s a constant struggle, especially having to deal with a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, but the key is having a great support structure. I couldn’t do it without my wonderful husband and team at Blossom.
What’s your best selling product/label?
The Blossom Collection and our jeans do exceptionally well. We work exclusively with 7 for all Mankind, James and True Religion, customising them with the Blossom Band so Mums-to-be can wear their favourite jeans during pregnancy.
How would you characterise your fashion style?
Classic with a bit of added flare. I love blending high end with high street and often wear a designer jacket with a shift from Gap or Topshop. A great jacket never fails to add luxe to even the most bargainous of outfits.
Who would you say is your style icon?
My mother and my three aunts; they’re four incredible women with amazing style. They’re very inspiring to me, and constantly influence my style decisions, be it in my own wardrobe or for Blossom designs.
Who is your favourite designer?
I’m a big believer in not being a slave to fashion and simply in wearing what works for you. I love Etro for their gorgeous shirts which are my go-to for everyday wear, but I wouldn’t say that there's one designer that I particularly covet - I like to mix and match..
Where do you buy your denim and why?
I make an annual pilgrimage to Barney’s in New York. They have almost every jean you could wish for under one roof and it’s a great way of trying them all on to get the right fit. 7 for all Mankind and James suit me the best.
Heels or flats and where do you buy them?
Heels! Although I need to be able to work, travel and stand in them, so comfort is key. A four-inch heel feels a lot less vertiginous with an in-built platform - that's my secret.
Where do you shop for your children’s clothes?
Bonpoint and Caramel. I can't resist classic children's clothes - little girls in traditional smocks are simply adorable, and these boutiques stock these classic items in abundance.
Do you eat organic and live an eco-conscious lifestyle?
I’m heavily into organic, especially now I have children. I think it’s really important to teach children about the environment so they can make informed decisions when they're older - it's hugely important to look after the next generation.
What beauty products are currently in your bathroom cabinet?
I have a very low maintenance beauty regime but I believe a good moisturiser is an essential part of every woman's skincare regime. Crème de la Mer and La Prairie are my absolute favourites but I enjoy trying new products from different brands.
What’s your signature fragrance?
Estee Lauder Youth Dew - it's a warm, spicy scent. I’ve been wearing it for years.
What are your three must-have make up products?
I wear very little make up but I do love YSL Touche Eclat (great for hiding the signs of too little sleep) and a good lip liner and gloss from Kiehls.
How would you describe the style of your home?
Very eclectic and a real reflection of mine and my husband’s love for travel. It’s a bit like my background, a blend of east and west.
Where do you buy your furniture and home accessories?
I love trawling flee markets and antique shops. When I was decorating my house I went to Paris and picked up some great pieces to restore. I believe a home should tell a story of your travels.
What was the last thing you put on your credit card?
I’ve just bought tickets for the family to see the Sound of Music at the theatre. My daughter adores the film and knows the words to all of the songs.
And finally, where else do you love to indulge?
Amazon for books and toys, JW Flowers (for gorgeous blooms to brighten the home and office) and Beverly Hills Bakery (when I want to say thank you - or treat myself!).
