Coffee With Emmy Scarterfield
of Emmy

emmy image 2Emmy Scarterfield is the founder of luxury custom made wedding shoes, Emmy. Having worked in Milan designing shoes for five years, she set up Emmy shoes four years ago and now lives in Islington. She is expecting twin girls!

We had a coffee with Emmy to find out what inspired her to set up her own business, dig deep about all about her shopping habits and discover where she likes to shop online.

What inspired you to create Emmy?
I’ve always had the greatest love for shoes and design and I was at the age when lots of my friends were getting married and they were always asking me to help them find dreamy wedding shoes.

emmy site of the weekI was really shocked by the choice available and realised there was a huge gap in the market to do something better.

What makes your product unique?
I think the fact that the bride can choose every element of the shoe; the shape, colour, detail and also the fact that all our shoes are super super comfy, sexy and feminine (in a demure way!).

How do you get a good work/life balance?
I do now but I definitely didn’t at the beginning! When you start a business you put every hour of every day into it and I sacrificed a lot of social things just to get it off the ground but because it’s yours, it’s very rewarding.

Now I have a wonderful team helping me which gives me much more time to switch off and relax and I’ve taken to it really quite well! Worryingly so!

emmy shoeWhat’s your best selling product / label?
Definitely the Emmy shoe. I designed it for my wedding because I wanted something sexy and flattering with a high heel that you could wear all day and night. A shoe that you knew wouldn't fly off when you were being flown around the dance floor.

With my dance moves the strap was a must for me that day!

How would you characterise your fashion style?
A bit desperate at the moment! I never usually wear black (she’s wearing all black) but when you’re this pregnant (with twins!) any usual sense of style flies out the window! I’m much more of a summer girl so winter is always a bit challenging, let alone being pregnant as well!

Usually I’m very girly, light and airy. My absolute favourite colour is blush which I love teaming with something white and maybe a vintage print of some sort.

7 for all mankind question air emmy coffee withWhere do you buy your denim and why?
Always 7 For All Mankind

Where do you buy your knitwear and why?
I love knitwear and I have this theory that once you wear cashmere you don’t go back.

A great friend of mine is the director of knitwear for Burberry Prorsum so I think it’s only right to support her and I’ve got some really gorgeous pieces that I wear to death!

If you’re buying luxe lingerie where do you head and why?
Tallulah Lingerie of course! (Tallulah is based below Emmy shoes.)

Heels or flats and where do you buy them?
I don’t really buy other people’s shoes as a rule but if I’m buying flats I think French Sole have some lovely styles and I saw that Toast have some sweet pumps in for summer.

Usually I’m in 3 or 4 inch heels every day so as a lover of shoes I’m pretty excited about getting back in to them now. I’ve really missed them in the last few months.

Where did you shop for your maternity wear?
I’ve bought a couple of pieces from Velvet. Their stuff is very well designed and they have some beautiful colours (a lot of blush) and I’ve bought a couple of things from Isabella Oliver too.

graham and green mary jane socksWhere do you shop for your babies clothes?
I’ve gone pretty wild seeing as they’re not even born yet and I’ve done pretty much all of it online. When I first found out I was pregnant I had visions of me and my husband pottering around the shops picking up little things for our darlings but the reality is he gets bored, I need the loo and the whole shopping whilst pregnant idea is actually not ideal at all!

I’ve bought some gorgeous things from Blooming Marvellous, Mothercare and some amazing Mary Jane socks from Graham & Greenwhich will go straight on them. I’m already planning outfits!

Do you eat organic and live an eco conscious lifestyle?
We try our best to be as eco conscious as possible and recycle where we can. We also get a Riverford delivery once a week which I’m sure has contributed to the twin status!

What beauty products are currently in your bathroom cabinet?
Well until yesterday I had a lot of gorgeous things in my bathroom but then my cleaner knocked them all off and smashed the lot!

Usually I have a supply of Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins, I literally am the queen of it, and at least two Touché Eclat because I always find they run out at the most inopportune moment!

marc jacobs blushWhat’s your signature fragrance
Blush by Marc Jacobs. Thankfully it was one of the few things that didn’t smash!

Which skincare brand do you depend on?
It depends what time of year it is. It’s my birthday in December and then of course there’s Christmas so I’ll always ask for a supply of Eve Lom products which keep me going for half the year. When they run out I love Clarins products until it’s Birthday time again!

What are your three must-have make up products?
Clinique High Definition Mascara and Touche Eclat are a must. Then for my lips I love Pout lip gloss because someone gave it to me for my wedding day and now it always reminds me of that. I also love Juicy Tubes and usually have about 10 floating about at the bottom of my bag. I’ve even got my little nieces into them too - much to my sister’s dismay!

How would you describe the style of your home?
A bit like my fashion style and my show room; very girly, light, and calm. My poor husband! It’s mainly white with a few bursts of colour (namely pink), in fact we recently bought a blush linen sofa which I just adore. With a cat and two babies on the way it’s not really the most practical but then who cares!

Where do you buy your furniture and home accessories?
We had our wedding list at John Lewis so we always head there and Aria which is a gorgeous boutique just round the corner.

the white company cralyle stripeWhat kind of linen do you go for and where do you buy it?
I have a couple of fetishes for buying things. One is laundry bags and the other is linen and towels! It’s ridiculous I know but I love them.

Liberty has some amazing linen and I’ve just bought a whole set from The White Company

And finally, where else do you love to indulge?
Everywhere! I've become the queen of online shopping since I’ve been pregnant!
