Coffee With Madeleine Thompson
of Madeleine Thompson

maddy headshot Madeleine Thompson, 27, was born in Hong Kong and it's from there that she takes much of her creative inspiration. She now lives and works in Chelsea, London.

We had a coffee with Madeleine to find out what inspired her to set up her own business, dig deep about all her shopping habits and discover where she likes to shop online.

madeleine thompson knitWhat inspired you to create Madeleine Thompson?
I was working as a buyer for Seibu in Hong Kong and they asked me to design some jewellery for them. I was extremely flattered and tempted but knew I'd probably be better doing it for myself, not for someone else.

I've always loved designing jewellery and had been doing it for years on the side but this opportunity gave me the confidence to bite the bullet and really make something of it.

As a buyer I knew how to approach the big stores; I marched into Harvey Nichols (without an appointment) and they took the collection straight away.

The cashmere side of the business started a bit later on because I saw a real gap in the market for affordable, trendy and original cashmere. I’ve always thought that everyone should be able to own beautiful cashmere but with some of the prices out there it just wasn't possible.

What makes your product unique?
Jewellery wise there is nothing quite like it and cashmere wise I think it's the fact that it’s affordable but that the quality isn’t compromised for profit. A lot of the good quality cashmere brands are ridiculously expensive now.

madeleine thompson gold heart chain necklaceHow do you get a good work/life balance?
Working for yourself, you have to force yourself to be disciplined; I make sure I’m at my desk by 8 o’clock every morning.

It's a huge challenge having your own business and I find it very hard to switch off. I love pilates though and the great thing about being your own boss is that you can squeeze in a class in the afternoon and don’t have to fight with the rest of the world in the post work evening rush.

What’s your best selling product / label?
Definitely our Cashmere Hat. It’s unisex so girls AND boys love it and it helps that we’ve had loads of celebs papped in it. Cashmere hats are in for A/W so long may it last!

How would you characterise your fashion style?
I’d say I’m quite eclectic and unique. I mostly wear dresses of some sort. The main thing for me is that I’m comfortable; I never wear anything tight. I just love to shop so I’m always on the lookout for new original things.

Who would you say is your style icon?
Chloe Sevigny always looks ultra stylish and I love the way she’s brave with what she wears - it’s rare to see these days.

I also love the way Sienna Miller dresses. She wears lots of our cashmere and always makes it look amazing so I love her even more for that!

I don’t wear jeans that much but I love my zip pair from Abercrombie - they’re by far my favourite.

Knitwear?
Madeleine Thompson of course!

Heels or flats and where do you buy them?
Havaiana flip flops or sky high heels, usually from Miu Miu, but nothing in between.

Do you eat organic and live an eco conscious lifestyle?
I always buy organic ingredients and I always use my own bags when I’m shopping. I love my Anya Hindmarch I’m Not A Plastic Bag - the whole idea is just genius.

Do you ever buy food online?
Yes from Food Full Stop and Simple Simon Pies.

chloe coffee withWhat beauty products are currently in your bathroom cabinet?
I have very sensitive skin and I swear byDermologica. The range is brilliant and it makes you smell like you’ve just left the spa.

What’s your signature fragrance?
Chloe! It’s delicious!

Which skincare brand do you depend on?
Dermologicaand Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I heard that Kate Moss puts it all over her face when her skin is dry and leaves it on all night. I tried it and it’s the best kept beauty secret.

What are your three must-have make up products?
I actually don’t wear any make up. Only for special occasions and even then I feel like a drag queen.

How would you describe the style of your home?
Quite girly... in fact very girly! I love a fairy light or two!

My home definitely has an Asian influence and it’s quite eclectic like my fashion sense. You won't be surprised to hear there's lots and lots of cashmere layered everywhere.
