Ahhhhhh Advent! Wednesday 14th November 2007 by Cherry Menlove
Advent...Say it with a hush and a whisper as if the very word needs the type of reverence usually reserved for members of the clergy. Advent is an event in my home. I awake on the first day of December to find an advent calendar on my pillow.
My lovely HTB (husband to be) knows how much I adore the run up to Christmas and it’s well worth spending a few pounds indulging this little whim in order to have me dancing around the bedroom in delight whilst it’s still pitch black outside. Besides, I have many responsibilities in my life and I’d simply go insane if I were unable to release the child in me at least once a year (mockers beware!).
The tradition of opening a magical door each day in December in the run up to Christmas is something that I’ve enjoyed since childhood. I would always be the first of my siblings out of bed in the morning so I could sit with the Christmas tree lights on before it got light and before I had to get ready for school. Then I’d race home at lunchtime to do the very same whilst sipping homemade soup and munching hot buttered toast.
Advent is something that I’ll take with me into old age. And my children will of course have advent calendars and hopefully my love of it will be contagious enough for them to catch it. I look forward to filling twenty four little draws or pouches with all sorts of goodies.
There are some BEAUTIFUL advent calendars out there and here are my personal favourites:
Aspen & Brown Wooden Advent Calendar
This gorgeous calendar is beautifully made and will become an intrinsic part of your family's Christmas year after year (pictured above left).
GLT Co. Applique Advent Calendar
This fabric advent calendar in red and white gingham has 24 generously sized pockets which you can fill with your own choice of little Christmas treats. An advent heirloom (pictured right).
Caroline Zoob
This is an alternative and creative take on the traditional advent calendar. Fill the garland with goodies and a decorative touch to your home for the festive season.
If you want to prepare your own advent calendar this year (as opposed to buying chocolate last minute in the supermarket) then now’s the time to get started.
