Art Deco Decadence

Whether you’re a fan of antiques or you love your design cutting edge and contemporary, art deco interiors are adored by many for their clean lines, dramatic contrasts and silver screen inspired accents.
Enjoy the trend today with furniture, lighting and home accessories in high shine metallics, light-catching glass and sleek mirroring for a look that is as relevant today as it was last century.
Lighting is the obvious way to add art deco to your home. Perfect for brightening up dark corners in living or dining zones or as a statement piece in the home office, the five-arm Deco lamp at Heals has the textbook curves, metallic glint and neat half-globe hoods to suit any 1930s styled space.
But over the dining table or in the bedroom, the Deco shade chandelier at The White Company (pictured right) may be more appropriate. Intertwining arms in clear acrylic – less heavy and more durable than glass – wrap around the bulb to reflect light for a stunning statement on any ceiling fitting.
The period often saw mirrored finishes and metallics paired with glossy black lacquers or simple woods so stepping up to the mark this season is John Lewis, with its super-chic Astoria collection (pictured below left).
The range includes two console plus a lamp table and chest of drawers, but our favourite is the trundly little side table: a solid floating-style cube that sits perfectly alongside any sofa or bed.
Those who like their furniture a little more family-friendly will appreciate instead the irresistible art deco side table at Graham & Green (pictured top left) which has four gently curving legs, a sleek mirrored finish and a generously-sized circular top to add a dash of glamour to any morning coffee or afternoon tea break.
For larger pieces, try The Conran Shop which stocks some superb art deco examples including this straight-from-the-twenties mirrored chest (pictured right). All clean lines and smooth surfaces, it works well in both feminine and masculine styled spaces and when teamed with the matching bedside table adds serious sparkle and retro style.
Take a look at Sweetpea & Willow’s Venetian glass screen (pictured left) which has three panelled sections in bright and shiny mirroring to create an instant dressing area or cubby corner in the bedroom.
For a feminine feel, drape with scarves and favourite garments in soft silk and cashmere – but remember, the result should be casually arranged, not messily heaped.
If your idea of good design is all in the details or you simply want to dip a toe in the twenties-thirties trend Complete the look with this pretty little crystal perfume bottle by Lavender Room (pictured right): a sparkly addition to any mirrored dressing table.
And with the latest offering from Zara Home, it’s even easy to extend the style to the bathroom with their snappy little set (pictured left).
Including soap dish, tumbler and dispenser in white porcelain with mirror detailing, it's the perfect finishing touch to any deco-styled home.
