Blissful Bathing Tuesday 6th November 2007 by Georgie Coleridge Cole
If life is hectic and your home never feels quite like your own, it’s important to keep one place as your own. Whilst sleeping in separate bedrooms mightn’t be all that conducive to a healthy relationship, separate bathrooms is something we do condone.
But if separate bathrooms just isn’t all that feasible (and frankly space is so sacrosanct these days) then separate sinks should be your number one priority when redesigning your bathroom. And if they’re not all that practical either then you’ll just have to train him to clean up the toothpaste...
When it comes to blissful bathing, a bath to bathe in, in a bathroom you adore, is essential. And whilst a wet room might sound like a good idea, take our advice and ensure that it’s not your only option. A free standing bath is our tub of choice; regal, spacious and attractive all at once.
If free standing doesn’t appeal then there is one other option: Kohler are the masters of creation when it comes to water borne experiences and it doesn’t get much better than their rectangular River Bath (pictured right).
If you’ve the room for it then an armchair of some description looks the part (pictured left, Lombok ). But if you haven’t, then there are laundry boxes that double as seats.
Think carefully about your laundry basket. Whilst it's predominantly a functional item there are some beautifully designed baskets and boxes that will enhance your space (picture below, John Lewis ).
Storage space and clutter free surfaces are essential when it comes to stress free bathing and whilst the likes of The White Company , The Cotswold Company and John Lewis offer a good selection of purposely designed bathroom units, a traditional looking chest or table that you wouldn’t instantly associate with a bathroom is a welcomed contrast to a white bath and tiles.
If your budget allows then wallpaper is a sophisticated alternative to tiles. Not that Fired Earth tiles are to be sniffed at but wallpaper does look smart. Visit Fabrics & Papers for fabulous wallpaper available to purchase online.
Bath towels are not to be compromised on. Be sure to opt for luxe; there’s nothing better than stepping out of the bath into a deliciously warm and lavish bath sheet.
And bath sheets take an age to dry so a heated towel rail or well positioned towel stand will ensure they’re nice and snug each time you come to use them.
If your bathroom is to be blissful then it’ll need to smell blissful as well as look blissful. Equip your bathroom with fine bath oils, room spray and your favourite scented candle (pictured left, Jo Malone ).
Finally monogrammed hand towels , tooth mugs, tissue box holders and soap dishes all make decorative accessories that’ll lead to a bathroom you love.
Now all you need to do is give yourself half an hour, run a bath of bubbles, pour a glass of wine, slip in, lie back and relax. What bliss.
