Bookish Chic Monday 3rd September 2007 by Cherry Menlove
We accessorise our wardrobe without a moments thought, the latest must-have bag or necklace as we fly out the door knowing that the extra detail can transform a simple outfit into a blooming great one!
It’s just as easy to accessorise our homes in this disposable and seasonal way. Regular readers of my blog, Tales from Pixie Wood , will know how much I like to decorate parts of my home using books. In fact reading material in general is a wonderful way to add character to your rooms.
Magazines make their covers look beautiful in order to sell as many copies as possible. Use the hard work that they put in, month after month, to your benefit and couple the latest glossy (or an old classic if you’re lucky enough to own any) with your latest purchase from Conran Octupus. (Their fabulous books feature interior design, gardening, cooking, travel and crafts, and the illustrations and photography make them lovely coffee table books.)
From the pictures, you’ll see that in my own living room at the moment is the latest issue of Vanity Fair, in all its lilac glory, sitting alongside Peggy Porchen’s ‘Pretty Party Cakes’ .
Both items complement each other and the same can be said for a side table on the other side of the room. I was bought Audrey Hepburn ‘The Paramount Years’ for my birthday in August and recently spotted a Cath Kidston book whilst out thrifting.
These two books are beautifully presented in their own right but make a colourful addition to the pale blue side table when put together.
If your books aren’t valuable then why not place a fresh vase of flowers on top of them or even artistically stack a pile of books and use it for elevating a small lamp.
I adore being surrounded by literature and regularly have more than two on the go at the same time. Each book represents a journey that I’ve been on and whether I liked the book or not, the journey itself is not negated.
Besides, at this time of year we’re all reminded of how it was when we went back to school after a long lazy summer. Surely ‘Bookish Chic’ has to be making a comeback sometime soon!!
