Home decorations should not be restricted to Christmas, Easter and birthdays. And regular readers of this column will know that I adore to decorate according to, and using the best features of, any given season.

cherry menlove apple wreathWe are currently coming into the apple season and so in honour of this most tasty orb I encourage every homemaker out there to create their own apple door wreath.

Easy to assemble, lovely to look at and the perfect little gift for a hostess or deserving girl friend, all make it my dear reader, well worth the 15 minutes it will take you to create.

You will need:
14/15 apples
a knitting needle
a wire hanger
x2 lengths of contrasting ribbon approx 12" in length
(find a vast selection of ribbon at VV Rouleaux)

  • Take each apple and carefully poke the knitting needle through its middle. Do it slowly, working it through rather than just prodding.
  • Once you've finished skewering your apples thread them on to the wire hanger that you have untwisted and stretched in to one long piece.
  • Once all of your apples are on the hanger twist the two end pieces together and flatten down, sealing the ring of apples. Snip the end off one of the lengths of ribbon and wrap it around the join in the wire ring in order to cover it.

  • Hang it on your front door or even on the door of your potting shed as I have done. I can see my new wreath out of my kitchen window as I stand at the sink.

Colourful and inviting, it will served to remind you that the best ways of making our houses into homes are often the most simple and seasonal.

And for folk that can’t find fifteen, The Original Wreath Company do a lovely version in orange....
