Changing Bags – That needn’t let the side down Friday 4th January 2008 by Dulwich Mum
Bea Parry-Jones is a late thirty something mother of two. She’s author of hugely successful blog Dulwichmum , in which she documents her efforts to avoid absolute lunacy and remain on the right side of conscientious parenting. She and her husband spend a small fortune on private education, Baby Boden, Babybels and the au pairs gym membership.
Bea’s first novel “Sex Lies and Sellotape – confessions of a Dulwich mum” will be published in 2008.
I’ve always been partial to splashing out on great accessories. A girl can be full-term and positively portly but still carry off a super status bag! A simple outfit can become a complete wow when a lady totes the right arm candy (and I don’t mean a pooch or boy chum).
Let’s face it girls, during pregnancy we might gain a few pounds, our ankles might puff up like turnips and our fingers might bulge like Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference sausages but a perfect carry all tote will still fit like a glove...
Long after you’ve been forced to hang your prized diamond rings around your neck (for fear of having them surgically removed from your swollen digits), an iconic bag will always impart the necessary gravitas needed to be taken seriously at the DVF sale!
In short, pregnancy is a great excuse to invest in a new handbag and set the tone for yummy mummy parenting...
The Mulberry Roxanne (always been a personal favourite) is an ideal post delivery accessory and it’s choc full of handy pockets. It can become an instant baby changing bag with the addition of a super practical (don’t you just hate that word?) handbag liner containing nappies, folded mat, wipes, raisins (organic), drinks and health visitor's red book.
Parenting paraphernalia can be instantly scooped out for a lunch date with the girls sans enfant! And if he questions the necessity of your Roxy in the baby budget then just be sure to demonstrate to him that with the addition of hook n stroll pram clips , it’s even possible to clip it on to the handlebar of your pram like a conventional changing bag!
But if you wish to invest in a real changing bag, check out the Lautrec by Timi and Leslie - it’s well made, cutesy and eye catching, or the Terre baby bag – it’s made of such lovely leather.
The Storksak Elizabeth in tan is simply beautiful and extremely functional and, the Alexandra Bee Sophia is a very well thought through and stylish piece of parenting kit!
So you see, motherhood should not mean that we compromise on style; thankfully there’s a whole host of ladies out there creating fabulous products to keep us looking our best.
Next time we’ll discuss underwear (OHMYGOD!).
