Create The Perfect Nursery Monday 27th August 2007 by Georgie Coleridge Cole
Creating the perfect nursery is one of the most exciting jobs for expectant parents and whilst it’s easy to throw oodles of money at the finest kiddy wall paper money can buy, it’s worth bearing in mind how quickly they'll grow out of it.
So whilst ABC borders might seem a lovely idea, if the thought of removing them just a few years later to replace with planes or princesses takes it way over budget then stick to a blank canvas of neutral walls, floors and curtains.
The focal point of your baby’s nursery will be the cot, the crib or the moses (pictured left a modern take on the moses ) so that’s always a good starting point. A worthwhile investment, choose well and you’ll be able to pass it down through the family – or hang on to it for when the grandchildren come to stay! For a traditional take on the moses visit Nursery Window (pictured, right).
There are some great furniture companies catering for the children’s bedroom market (try Aspace or The Children’s Furniture Co ; you’ll want some stylish storage (a chest of draws and wardrobe) for all those baby outfits you’ll undoubtedly get given.
Opt for neutral colours that’ll be versatile enough to go with polka dots, pink stripes or animal farm bedding. Remember to choose a chest of draws that’s the right height and width to change the little one on – far easier and better for your back than rolling around on the floor.
If you want to add a bit of life to the walls - that won't cost you a fortune in both time and money - then visit Sticky Ups or Supernice for sheep, stars or butterflies decalls that are as quick and easy to apply as they are to remove.
A calm environment is of the utmost importance so restrict bold bright colours to the playroom. Like anywhere in your home, lighting will help create the right atmosphere: pastel colours and a softly lit light should do the trick.
And above all have fun; accessorise the nursery to you heart's content. Mobiles, pictures, cushions, curtain ties (pictured, right), beanbags, bunting and quintessential Beatrix Potter ornaments will add character, cosiness and charm.
