Fall For French Furniture...
Monday 1st September 2008 by Elizabeth Richards
As well known for their elegant interiors as they are for their forward thinking fashion, the French have long been lending their influence to us Brits who find the curved lines, intricate detailing and elegant shapes look as good in our period town houses as in the traditional English country home.
Create the perfectly appointed drawing room with a plump sofa dressed in silk or linen and a velvet-upholstered chaise longue, choose a sexy yet stylish boudoir bedroom or enjoy a rustic kitchen with freestanding storage, cupboards and an oversized table – there are few spaces that won’t benefit from a little French styling.
For the easiest way to create the perfect French bedroom look, head straight to Feather & Black for their French-inspired Tilly collection of distressed white-painted furniture.
Star of the show is this stunning bed (pictured right) with carved details, elegant curves and upholstered head and footboard (available in a fabric of your choice).
It needn’t all be sensible creams and whites: add a touch of sparkle with the beautiful Burmese teak and metal-clad Constance side table (pictured left) from Brissi.
In stylish silver with the kind of detailing one expects from a hand-finished piece, it makes a stunning addition to any bedside or living space where it gives an instant lift to a neutral scheme.
A Louis XV chair is top of the style list for any lover of French furniture and it’s now even easier to source the design of your dreams with The Ultimate Louis. Choose from smart stripes, bold prints and vibrant colours or opt for the classic in distressed antique white with a sprung seat and simple calico upholstery – either way, you’re investing in a statement piece with lasting appeal.
In living spaces and bedrooms, the intricate detailing of a large French mirror makes an impressive statement.
Sweetpea and Willow have an excellent range but for tricky smaller spaces such as the bathroom or hallway, we adore the delicate Little Louis mirror at The French Bedroom Company (pictured right), available in gold or white.
And whilst you’re there, take a look at their hand carved and hand finished Provencal armchair (pictured top left) upholstered in beige French linen which is quite possibly the most perfect bedroom chair we’ve ever laid eyes on.
For a cosy yet functional kitchen, choose the totally covetable Provencal farmhouse table (pictured left) from Belle Maison which has a soft white-painted frame with authentic distressing and a large top in chunky oak.
Team with high backed wicker chairs dressed with comfy linen cushions to transform even an ordinary weekday breakfast into a seriously stylish moment.
The French tend to shun fitted kitchens in favour of a more versatile freestanding arrangement so the very tall and endlessly useful Secrets de Cuisine cabinet (pictured right) is a worthy investment.
Offering four large cupboards for tablewear, four cutlery and utensil drawers and seven rattan baskets to hold miscellaneous items, it's all you need to keep your kitchen both neat and tidy.
The White Company have too embraced the trend for French living. After a hard day’s work, put your feet up and relax the French way with their pretty velvet-upholstered Bergman chaise longue.
Available in three flattering shades - silver grey, mushroom or oyster - it looks fabulous teamed with a cashmere throw or cushions in silk or velvet and makes the perfect finishing touch to any stylish and chic abode.
