It's Coming Back...With Force! Tuesday 30th October 2007 by Cherry Menlove
We moved into our new home in May. We then spent WEEKS deciding on what shade of paint to apply to the various walls in the house. On occasions we spent vast amounts of money on paint and then made up for the splurge by spending less elsewhere.
However just a matter of a few months later I’m faced with somewhat of a dilemma; I ‘m falling rapidly, rapidly I tell you, in love with the idea of wallpaper once again.
It was a re-run of Sex and the City that did it. One of the episodes in the final season had Charlotte chatting to her bald policeman chappy in the Park Avenue bedroom that she acquired after her divorce from that other chappy who had an Oedipus complex and used to be in Twin Peaks.
Anyway Charlotte sat there on the bed and I lost track of what she was saying but instead began to imagine myself in her bedroom. What was it that was drawing me into her room in such a way that I wanted it to be mine?
After much narrowing of the eyes I realised that it was because the room had accents of wallpaper on some of its walls. Beautiful, soft grey, patterned wallpaper. It may be age or simply a shift in taste but in the bedroom I am hankering after, at least one wall will be basking in a protective covering of patterned genius.
My absolutes when starting this search are to keep it light, matt and English - I have a Victorian house and I think it’s important to honour that style. So, I’m going to be researching modern Victorian or perhaps modern Georgian styles of wallpaper as opposed to heading to the Far East for my inspiration. This is merely a style choice of mine and not gospel, but for what it’s worth, I do think it pays to work with your property as opposed to against it.
So, I thought I’d let you in on my first three ports of wallpaper call: The Clarissa Hulse Briar Range, Teaberry Wallpaper at Fabrics and Papers and Elanbach . Only time will tell whether we ever do get the pasting table out, but if I continue with those SATC re-runs it’ll be sooner rather than later!
