OK, so you may have already taken your summer break for this year but the following advice rings true whenever you holiday.

We always pack very carefully for time away but, what about our homes? Do we prepare the home we leave behind as thoroughly as we prepare the suitcase? I learnt long ago that to come home from a trip to a home that was fully prepared to welcome me back (and see me through that post-holiday slump) was worth all the preparation in the world.

So here are my suggestions for making your homecoming… well, more homely!

The week before leaving for your trip, ensure that your home is absolutely spotless. Clean and clear all floors, surfaces and corners. Tidy up, throw out and re-cycle everything that doesn’t need to be out on display and get as clutter free as possible.

And When She Got There, The Cupboard Was Bare!

If you know that you have a flight coming in late at night remember to freeze some milk and some freshly sliced bread before you leave. This way you’ll be able to enjoy a piece of toast alongside a hot cuppa when you arrive home tired and starving - trips to the farmers market can wait until the following day.

Ensure your cupboards are stocked for your homecoming and arrange an Ocado delivery to arrive shortly after you arrive home. Most companies narrow delivery times down to an hour for your convenience.

Trashed!

Empty every bin before leaving and replace with a fresh and clean bin liner - there is nothing worse than the smell of rotting rubbish to greet you on your way in through the front door!

The same goes for your laundry bin. You’ll have so much washing to do upon your return that the last thing you’ll want is a pile already waiting. Do it beforehand and you’ll have a wardrobe of fresh clothes to wear while your holiday clothes are being laundered.

Finally!

If you know that you may be prone to a touch of the holiday blues plan a special end – of – the - holiday treat.

chef on boardWhether it’s a DVD and a delicious feast from Chef On Board or dinner at your favourite restaurant, put your homecoming treat into your holiday spending budget and remember that your homecoming is just as important as your departure!

See you next week.
