Hmmmm, I’ve just heard that the second day of January is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. HOGWASH!

I realise that it’s easy to fall into the mire of sad and nostalgic thoughts; remembering the lovely long holiday that has just passed and realising that you only have the prospect of January, February and March to look forward to. But bear in mind that your tree will be going up again in around eleven months time (and the prep for Christmas 2008 will start way before that) and you’ll soon be making the most of the present.

the holding company home accessNow’s the time to dust off and focus on how we can make our homes a place of solace and calm after the bashing it received over the silly season. So clean, clear, re-cycle, give away and generally make it as ordered as possible. (I take the decorations down on New Years Day - New Year, new start and all that.)

A visit to The Holding Company should be high up your list of priorities. There you’ll find every type of storage solution you could possibly want for – so there really is no excuse!

With the de-decking of the house comes a huge purge of all things dusty, dated and downright dowdy. I want lightness, brightness, and soft colours with a mere dash of primary to ease me into the promise of the year ahead.

I want to know where everything is and not have to trek across mountains of clutter to get to the cutlery draw. You won’t believe how much space will be revealed once the tree has been re-cycled and the mantle cleared.

the holding company kitchen It’s about making your house as easy and enjoyable to live in as possible - that way it can do its job of giving you comfort, warmth and safety and you can do your job, whatever that may be…

Don’t believe the pessimists who try to ruin our optimism by telling us that today is a day for throwing in the towel and retreating under blankets. We all prefer a challenge and that route seems far too easy for us. Decide now that this year, 2008, your home will be light, bright and heaven to know.

Happy New Year and all my love and best wishes for a splendid 2008.
