Mattifying Moisturisers Sunday 4th May 2008 by Elizabeth Richards
Whatever your skin type, hot or humid weather has the ability to send your makeup slipping southwards. Throw in an oily complexion and you have one big disaster. A shiny t-zone, enlarged pores and congested zones – whether slight or severe – are the classic signs of over-enthusiastic sebum production so act now for a fresh and youthful look in time for summer.
It can be tempting to skip moisturiser but allowing skin to dehydrate will only serve to make the problem worse: apply too many drying anti-shine products and skin will merely work harder to replace lost moisture. Whilst the use of an oil to cleanse the skin will help to balance, some kind of control may still be needed; a mattifying moisturiser will take care of shine breakthrough while keeping skin well hydrated.
Most formulas contain no oil and are impregnated with blotting powders and ingredients to regulate sebum production, absorb excess oil and provide a smooth and long lasting base for makeup, with none of the flaking or peeling associated with more aggressive alcohol-based shine fighting products (toner being the most obvious culprit).
Be prepared to shop around – remembering that the problem may be hormonal so that what works on one day may not on another – and look for formulas containing anti-oxidants (such as vitamins A, C and E), salicylic acid and UV screens which add extra protection against ageing, blemishes and the elements.
