Notes On Summer... Tuesday 17th June 2008 by Cherry Menlove
Socially, there’s no better time to entertain at home than during the summer season – the best thing being you can use your house AND your garden. Fling the doors open wide as early as you can and invite your friends round for a breakfast meet or brunch; it’s the perfect way to start the day.
Alternatively invite them over for entire afternoons at a time and gorge on the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables that are currently available.
Bake peaches, raspberries, apricots and strawberries - very slowly - in a moderately hot oven drizzled with vanilla syrup, cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg.
Use a heavy bottomed oven dish that’s about two inches deep as you’ll want to preserve the sugared juices. (Le Cruset does the perfect dishes for this!)
Whether eating in or out, throw a summer table cloth on the table, pop some pretty china and informal napkins out and of course some flowers.
Begin to collect all manner of glass jars as it’ll soon be time to fill them with home-made conserves and chutneys.
But before you fill them with home made goodies that would leave even the WI feeling a touch inadequate, use them all as tea light lanterns for those solstice suppers you’ll be having and pots for posies of freshly picked flowers.
Throughout the summer months, fill your home with posies, jars and vases of flowers everywhere!
Sweet Williams and Cornflowers never fail to capture the look and feel of summers gone by. Plant your Sweet William seeds NOW if they are to flower in time for next summer and your Cornflowers, well Cornflowers are pretty extraordinary...
All you’ll need is a pile of vintage suitcases to stand them on and a copy of Cider with Rosie to see you through those awfully hot (here’s hoping) sleepless nights.
